Hello there!
I have a question about Akubra vintage identification, specifically in Akubra Snowy River model.
I have been told that these were introduced in 1982 after the movie which was the inspiration for the model
(is it true or just one of the old models just got this nickname after the movie)?
But to the matter - I have one vintage specimen hunted in second hand store, and I wonder
if there is any way to identify the vintage (except C-14 radiocarbon dating ).
It seems to be "Glen Gray" and it has pretty big gaps in the sweatband stitching when comparing it to the 2020
specimen. It's quite soft and with size of 60 it seems to be well shrunk, as the new 61 is like airplane hangar
on my head. I have read that many details can vary from retailer to retailer so is the dating possible in any way?
Thanks in advance
Tom
OK, here we go:Welcome, Don. Photos will help a lot. Inside, outside, various angles, and any labels please.
Great looking hat there. I think the Snowy River was based off the hat in the movie. So the model isn't more older then 1982. With that said I have seen Akubra Snowy River hats from the 80's and they all have keyhole size tags and ribbon hat band. I have one from 2003 that has the same size tag but a different hat band. The size tags got larger and more rectangular about seven years ago. The hat band is nice and I have never seen one like it before. But it does say Akubra so either it is a approved after market one or it came with the hat at some point in time. If I had to guess its form the 90's sometime. So 30 to 30 years old. But that's just an educated guess.

Nice hat though. Love the colour.

Hi all!
I´m new to the fedora lounge, and I´m enjoying it a lot.
I have a question, I want to order a hat from Agnoulita Hats, I tried to contact them by email, through their website, instagram... no answer from them... Did they close their shop? Anyone having the same problem?
Thanks in advance

That's unfortunate, and I hope they'll recover without too much difficulty. I guess that means the hat I ordered through EA in December won't arrive until some time in 2022....but I have been informed Akubra facility had been partially flooded and I'll have to wait to the summer...
Persistence is the key. I would go through their Etsy site and I have lodged a complaint through Etsy and received a response and an apology from Mr P.Hi all!

So I am planning on treating myself to a new Akubra. I originally wanted a Campdraft in Fawn but that doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. At least not right now. Everyone is out of stock. So I am looking at the Territory and Sombrero right now. Get the ultimate shade maker for sun protection. Can anyone comment on either hat? I have a Stetson 5X with a 4 inch brim that’s pretty dang heavy. Are these hats just as heavy or lighter? @deadlyhandsome may know? Any input will be appreciated from anyone.

I have a Territory (Imperial grade) I often call The Big T. I found my size second hand on ebay & doubt it had been worn much, if at all. Some guys can't handle big hats. I'm sure the quality varies from hat to hat as with most Akubra's but mine is quite good. The brim is quite dense but thin & flexible; much better than a Stagecoach as an example. Keep in mind the "T" is meant to be worn in the Outback so the brim has plenty of Packer draw, front & back.So I am planning on treating myself to a new Akubra. I wanted a "T" as a perfect candidate for a Planters hat. The 6" OC has enough height for a deep rim crease with bubble, leaving the crown at ~4.25 - 4.50" tall. The brim curl on the RE should keep the brim flat & from returning to the Packer draw. Haven't completed the job yet.

Probably not as big, I've considered the "T" as a candidate for a smaller version of the hat worn by actor Garret Dillahunt in his portrayal of Ed Miller in "The Assassination of Jesse James......."

That's what it's commonly called in parts of the world that still have wild frontiers left, where they might still wear such outdoor hats for exploration (& they've never heard of Indiana Jones). This pic should help illustrate the draw.Jack, I'm unfamiliar with the term packer draw. Can you please educate me?
