Is there a name for the style of flat cap Nik (Rabbit) is wearing in these pictures?

That sort of looks like a one piece, not a 6 panel like someone else mentioned. Monsivais calls it a one piece crown flat cap but the sides and back look a little different which looks like just a style difference on the part of the hat maker.

Hold the feather over steam, like from a kettle. It's a fly tying trick that works well.

Also, how are Pantropic hats, specifically the Explorer and how is their sizing? I can pick one up for under $100 and want a hat for laid back summer wearing that I don't need to baby. I hear they're a little floppy due to the looser weave and the brim doesn't pop up. Prior to this, I was heavily considering an Optimo Montecristi but its about 4-5x the price. Not that I mind if it's a much better investment over a knock around type of hat the Pantropic is though.

I’m not sure about the Explorer, but I have one Panotropic that is a decent hat. I’m not sure of the model name, but it is shaped like a fedora/Panama cross with about a 3” brim. Both front and back are turned down. Admittedly I’ve never owned a “fine” straw, but mine looks good enough to wear in good company, anyway.

Thank you! I may migrate my inquiries over to the Panama thread to get more eyes but did find a few reviews about the Pantropic being a little floppy in the brim. I'm now looking at the Jaxons since they seem to be blocked nicer and look equal in quality.

From what I know and have seen in photo's it would be a split between flat caps, Fedoras and bowlers. No idea where to look in London except the usual. Lock and co. on St. James's street. Herbert Johnson in Piccadilly Arcade. But they can be pricey compared to online shopping.

I’ve never been on Facebook. How is this forum changing? I know it is changing because so many of the once regular contributors no longer post. I do know that all things change and that most of us are resistant to change; we want it to be the he way it first was we we joined. I honestly don’t know what it is about the forum that is off putting to the once prolific contributors. This is my only “social media” exposure as I don’t Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, or anything else so I don’t have a good point of reference. I’m genuinely curious: how is the Lounge changing and is it really for the worse?

When the serial posting started last yr Bob Roberts tried to start a discussion on Excessive Posting in the hat forum which was quickly moved by a mod to another section. The posters in that section didn't see a problem with excessive posting because that section was for discussing & reminiscing at length the du jour of the day. That's what they do. So Bob's initiative died quickly without further action being taken.

The hat forum was always a wealth of knowledgeable people. Knowledgable about other things besides hats that might come up in discussion as well; think intelligent conversations. MOST of those members have now left because of the serial posting, which has spread beyond the original to most all threads in the hat forum. Moon summed it up best when he decided to pull back. Now we have posts & posters blowing kisses back & forth over toyo rice paper hats, wool vs felted, etc.

I recently had a lot of seat time behind the wheel to think & realized the hat forum has moved to being more like Facebook. And it was the serial posting that allowed that to happen...and that it was probably inevitable. Too bad.

Responding to every single post when the "Like" button would suffice: "I like that ribbon", "I like that color", "that looks good", etc. I would also add posting above your head.

Isn’t it now both? I get that there might be more posts that you aren’t interested in that you have to wade through to find posts of interest, but is that really so onerous? I just skip over the posts I’m not interested in.

I know that I’ll miss seeing your posts if you pull back. There’s a whole list of contributors that I wish were still active.

It's "different," and we've unfortunately lost some of our knowledge base, but in general, yes, the quality of hat discussion has deteriorated a bit. I have always viewed WHAYWT as the most "social" of the hat threads - the place where we converse a bit and bust chops occasionally. But the other, specialty, threads, such as say, Adam Alley, should be about hat information.

There has always been light-hearted discussion in the thread, just go back and read the posts.

I think it's cyclical. When I came on board (2014/14?), a new crop of posters had also come on board. This included moon and Bob and a few others. I truly believe some of the older members bailed on us because they didn't like OUR style. More loosey-goosey, more modern references and less pure reverence for the Golden Age.

Some have checked out for other reasons.

But, as we go forward, some of the newer Members will become old hands and develop more historical knowledge to impart. There are some on here now who unfortunately say some incorrect things about hat manufacturing, history, and the like, but some of those guys are going to learn, get better, and be the "experts" in the future. When moon first started on here, his historical knowledge wasn't near what it is now, but he became a go-to guy for many an academic discussion. Hell, I knew less than nothing, but (though I wouldn't call myself an expert, I'm comfortable making statements and answering many questions with some authority. But I learned at the feet of Steve, Alan, Anthony, Daniele, and several others.

However, losing moon, having Alan post less, losing the Hatted Professor - those were big blows to the knowledge base in recent history. That's noticeable to some of us who have been here a bit longer.

I’m relieved you brought this up. I think it is a very relevant topic and i know i struggle with the issues of “likes”, being liked and the sincerity of a critique or opinion. False praise is worse than no praise in my mind. False praise only diminishes honest praise which i think most would prefer but if i’m the type that “needs” false praise i prob outta go stand in front of the mirror.
I respect your views Jack and i’m sure other’s do as well.
