I too use books when flattening western brims preparatory to trimming them for conversion to fedoras. It works so well I’ve never thought of using anything else.

Are you sure? In the photo it appears to have only a single panel. The photo isn't real clear on that aspect.

I agree. I don't see any seams that would indicate the eight panels sewn together to make a "Newsboy" cap, or the button on top for that matter. I suppose it could be a vintage version of an Ivy cap, but the shape is different from modern Ivy caps.

It's difficult to determine from those photos, but the crown appears to be a single piece of material with darts/seams on the sides front and back to give it it's shape. I don't know the exact style name, but I like it.

Yeah, not a big deal. Particularly as going forward I will just not ever post on any topic where there is not an immediately identifiable existing applicable thread for it. Too much trouble to search around trying to figure out what past recent or zombie thread I should use for the new post. Learned my lesson, so will only post in existing threads from now on. Too bad, as I had some new topics I had wanted to raise. But again, not a big deal. I’ll just lurk and read mostly.

I've felt your pain on numerous occasions. One thing that I'll add is that the Lounge has a search button that allows you to search for topics you are interested in. You may have noticed it before, but I thought I would throw that out there in case you haven't. If threads happen to get merged, they will show up as a recently replied thread, so the topic should be close to the head of the forum. It also helps posting in similarly related threads. People on here are pretty good at directing you to threads that may have been idle for a while. I have benefitted from this in the past. That and merged threads tend to provide a lot of answers as well.

I've been interested in the hat that Raylan wears in the show Justified. I've scoured the web looking for one, and all I turned up were wool versions. I ran a search in the Lounge and low and behold there was a dedicated thread to it. That provided a lot of reading and a lot of learning. Good luck to you!

Raylan's hat probably deserves an entire forum just for itself. Heck, his hatband alone deserves its own forum. What a great show as well. I'd watch that show even if it was only about the hat. (Maybe it was.)

Hey guys, I remember reading an answer to this question somewhere, but I can't recall where.

I'm a size 7, 22" precisely. Would a hat that measures 22 1/2" be too big/loose? If not, would the proportions still look fine if the hat is 1/2" bigger?

Also, should one bother with a sweat stuffer of some sort at this point, or anything more than 1/4" is too big?

First spray hat around the band area - inside and out with a fine mist of water
Should be wet enough for water to be just wicked in by felt but not dripping with water
Then place it in the car that is parked in the sunshine
Check in 30 minute increments for size shrinkage

This method can be used for up 1 full size larger

First spray hat around the band area - inside and out with a fine mist of water
Should be wet enough for water to be just wicked in by felt but not dripping with water
Then place it in the car that is parked in the sunshine
Check in 30 minute increments for size shrinkage

This method can be used for up 1 full size larger

A somewhat more controlled method is to wet the sweat and place it over a bare incandescent bulb for 20 minutes or so.

Do NOT do this with a vintage hat.

The trouble with Leonard's novels is they're such an enjoyable read they go too fast. That, and there won't be any more of them.

Anyone familiar with older hat racks know exactly how hats were hung on top and bottom wires on this? Were some hooks not for hats?

I think it's hat on top, coat on bottom, scarf in the middle. You could use the bottom for hats as well and put your walking stick across the middle.

The first one is the "Arizona" in Canyon color and the second is the "Spirit" in granite color.

There really isn’t much difference between them. A different color felt and a different ribbon/band.
