Feather care? I've got a hat with a pheasant feather threaded through the brim but a part of it looks like bed head. Is there any way to smooth it out aside from replacing it?

Hold the feather over steam, like from a kettle. It's a fly tying trick that works well.

Caps aren't my thing, but I believe this might be an "Ivy" cap, also known as a "flat" cap. According to Delmonico Hatter, "Ivy caps, also referred to as Flat Caps, are constructed with a single panel of fabric on the top." Not a lot to go on, I know. But maybe it's a start...

Actually that appears to be a 6 or 8 panel cap.There are several common names ;newsboy,cabbie,etc.

Ok, I have a question. I have been reading a LOT about the various and sundry vintage Stetson 3X models and their history. Everything from nice westerns to dress fedoras including some Stetson 15's as well as 60's suede finish stingy brims. Now this 3X seems to have a great deal of history as well as crossover between westerns and fedora's, more than any other Stetson designation it seems. SO, my question.....is there a DEDICATED thread to the Stetson 3X and all it's history and incarnations here on the Lounge? If so, I cannot seem to find one. And IF NOT, what do you think we (vintage) 3X owners should perhaps start one??????????

I think that would be a useful thread. I have several across 3 decades and would love to post them and compare them with those others have.

I don’t see any panels there, just some floppiness that is deceptive. Does have the size and shape of a newsboy/cabbie but I don’t see the panels.

I think your threads were merged with older existing threads by the bartenders. No big thing...

I'll try to search within FL most of the time, but sometimes it is best to use Google and append "site:thefedoralounge.com" after the search text.

The bartenders have merged several of the threads I started. Just put in your due diligence and don’t worry if they get merged. They don’t delete what you did, only merge them.

I understand they were not deleted. I know how these things work. It’s just that I looked over the faqs but never saw mention of the importance of not starting a new thread for most things. At other fora I frequent, new threads are preferred over reawakening zombie threads. Live and learn.

I'm a moderator on another forum. We discourage repetitive threads. It goes both ways.

Not a big deal. I do recall advising you to not start new threads when an existing thread fits (even if the nuance is different). We all have a learning curve.

Are you sure? In the photo it appears to have only a single panel. The photo isn't real clear on that aspect.

As mentioned in the what hat are you waiting for thread, this hat arrived today with a wave in part of the brim and a bit of a bump in the bash.

I’ve reworked a few brims by hand with moderate success, not that it’s rocket science, but most things take time to master. Most came out quite nice but I’ve got one felt and one Panama that need some more work after initial attempts. Fun to learn as I go. Still I know there are usually “tips and tricks” for greater success. So I’ve read up and watched videos etc, but haven’t seen any specific advice/info on achieving a nice flat brim. I’ve left hats to dry on their crown, but for for flat brims after steaming/shaping, set to dry with brim down on clean flat surface? Put something on top of brim? Any tips/tricks to share specific to fixing fur felt flat brims?
