Thanks alanfgag, I was finally able to figure out what was going wrong. I wasn't unclicking the box mentioned, and I was including the wrong URL. Now I should be able to put the pictures up in my posts properly.

Now I just need to figure out why in-house links from thread to thread always redirect me to random threads, and what the requirements are to get a profile picture put up (some sort of privilege?[huh]) and with luck I'll be a regular here at the Lounge.
On the random links, that is a failing of V Bulletin, the software that runs the Forum. At one point, a major change was made, and links in posts earlier than that go seemingly wherever they want (always to an incorrect thread, often in a completely different part of The Fedora Lounge). Posts with links placed after that event still work just fine. Nothing can really be done to repair the errant links AFAIK.

Welcome to TFL, enjoy the Forum. A true wealth of knowledge, with lots of folks freely sharing that knowledge. One of the friendliest Forums I've seen.

Akubra Question:

What are the pros and cons of Imperial vs. Heritage grade felt?

Pros = Heritage is a denser, finer finished, nicer grade of felt.
Cons = Heritage cost more.

Some folks don't think the difference is that great to justify the price difference.
The Imperial is a very coarse finished felt that continues to felt a good bit. The Heritage doesn't seem to do that based on the one I have recently purchased.

I think a chin strap might be in order. We have three parents between the ages of 86 and 92 on line with you. Keeping fingers crossed that everybody gets a little wet and nothing worse.

Take pictures!

G'ay all,
I have a real problem. I have an Akubra felt hat that is less than a year old that smells really bad. I am sure it is a result of sweat that has encouraged bacteria to grow because of a prolonged period of humidity. I took it to dry cleaner and spent $25.00 to have it cleaned and it came back smelling the same. I have a feeling that I was ripped off. Any advise on getting rid of the smell. If I cannot get rid of it I will have to get a new hat. I have never had this happen before and have been wearing felt hats for the last 45 years.

Does anyone know how the Akubra Longreach compares to the Stockman. Are they pretty similar.

I have an Akubra Cattleman, which I love. But the brim can be a little unwieldy, especially while driving and commuting on the train. The Stockman and Longreach both have a smaller brim than the Cattleman.

I really want this hat (the Stockman or Longreach or even the Snowy River) to be my everyday hat.

anyone have any good sources for Pugarees? This old faded one isn't really doing it for me, even after handwashing it

I say bite the bullet and get a new hat. It may help if you let it air out for a while in a nice, sunny spot, more likely it's mold rather than bacteria.

1930s-style Fedoras

Recently I've watched several 1930s movies on TCM. I've enjoyed seeing the hats. The few fedoras I currently own have lower crowns than what I'm seeing in these films. Other than the Fed IV, is there a current production hat that has a taller crown with limited (or no) taper? Or is the Fed IV the only non-custom option?

Thanks!

I don't know anything about new hats. But I too really enjoy watching the hats in films of the 30s and 40s.

'Fraid your a bit out of luck there. That style of hat , as worn by Cagney et al back in the '30s is NOT the style in demand by the hat buying public today, so you won't find many off-the-shelf hats available in that style. As far as straighter crowned hats, there is the Akubra Campdraft, the Akubra Squatter( particularly the DM version sold here), the Akubra Bushman and the Borsolino Allessandria but all these hats have much wider brims than those found back in the '30s. 'Fraid your wants are a style best served by the Custom Hatters. :)

You know exactly what I'm talking about - it actually was around three or four Cagney movies I was watching about a week or so ago, and then several other 1930s movies over the past couple days. With my long, narrow face, I'd rather stay away from a thin ribbon (Campdraft, Alessandria, Stratoliner). I am waiting for a Stetson to arrive that I purchased from a fellow Lounge member - but it's definitely in the 40s/50s style, not 30s. I may end up going with a Moonstone Fed IV, and from what I read, it's a great hat. I just wanted to consider other options. But as you say, my options may be limited.
