A couple of months back I bought an old Resistol Open Road-style hat off ebay based on the listed measurements (no size listed). Unfortunately, the measurements were off and the hat turned out to be 7 or 7-1/8 and no where near the 7-3/8+ (sometimes 7-1/2) size I normally wear. Since it was too small, I decided to sell it and took it to Paris Hatters in San Antonio to have it cleaned first. Abe told me if it was cleaned, the sweat would not survive and needed to be replaced. I told him not to bother because I was selling it and he asked why I would sell such a nice old hat? When I told him it was too small, he had one of his employees look at it and asked it he could stretch it to a 7-3/8. I agreed to let them try, but did not expect such a big stretch to come out well. The result amazed me - it came out looking like a new hat and is one of the best fitting hats I own - its the one I am wearing in my avitar. So, it is possible and the results from Paris Hatters were great.

Stretching a hat from size 7 to 7 3/8, would a professional hat maker be able to do this or is the size difference too much and would ruin the hat? Thanks

I have searched the lounge for an answer to this question with no luck - what does a "15" (not 15X) marking on a Resistol western sweatband mean? The marking is next to the retailer's logo. I own a number of vintage Resistols, including a Diamond Horseshoe, but have not come across one with just a "15" stamp. I suspect that it may be an older hat, it has the Resistol Western lining, but the liner is red with a gold logo. Any info on the 15 marking or a guess as to the age is appreciated! (I have posted this in the Resistol Roundup, but thought I would try here too)

Thanks!

It's been pretty slow in general recently Scooter. I would guess a lot of the regulars will be around more once the temps drop and fur felts become more wearable. That's the way it usually seems to go anyway.

There are always some people who move on (Goose as an example of a guy who I really liked reading on here that's no longer around) and new people who join up.

Summer time in the Northern Hemisphere is usually kind of a slow time for the FL, people are doing summer things such as vacations, kids, sports, etc.

Im sure this has been asked and answered MANY times, but Im a newbie here! ;) I was wondering if there was a site (or link from here somewhere) that would give all of the construction terms/descriptions for mens hats. Ok, I know the crown and the brim, but that is IT. Welt..? Huh? Different types of sweat bands..? Really? So I guess that I am asking if there is a "Basic Fedora Terminology for Dummies". If not, one of you should write it, cuz Id buy it! Whats all this Beaver XX? Ok, Im just gonna walk away from that one...:) Bobbi

Welcome to the Lounge Bobbi, it is a bit confusing all at once but just look around a bit and you'll find this a comfortable place. I don't think you'll find all your answers in one place but here's the place to start here:

http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthread.php?52584-Links-To-Important-Hat-Forum-Threads

Also as far as terms, here's an external link:

http://www.hatsuk.com/hatsuk/hatsukhtml/bible/bible.htm

As far as Beaver XX, let's just say the subject isn't for the innocent but maybe actually worse than it sounds :) Take it one step at a time and you'll be ready for Beaver XXX, XXXXX, and maybe even Ten X Beaver. Sounds like your already having fun!

Unknown Maker - any ideas?

I just won this vintage (I'm guessing 1940s-50s) dead-stock, never-worn, still in the original box, brown 3X western hat, model = "Fortworth" as marked on the box, sold by Gammage's Western Wear in Moultrie, GA (no other markings). Nothing in the hat or on the box to indicate who made the hat for the store. Has anyone ever seen this model or box style before that might suggest the actual age or maker?

The Results

Hello everyone ,here are the results from Salmagundi.
I went there today and received my six fedoras after they were steam cleaned and reblocked .
Also two of them had new sweat bands installed .
I am very pleased with the results and would recommend them to anyone ,they are simply the best !

I'm not sure the pictures do justice ,but to give you an example the blue one and the black one both looked the same when I brought them to Salmagundi as they were both so dirty ,but now you can plainly see the difference in the color of the two.

All the Best Fashion Frank

Hi, so I have been trying to learn about grades, qualities and types of felt. I thought that I was doing OK, after some questions were answered for me regarding Beaver. So...I have a hat that has the store name, the Logo in the crown says Beaver Hats, but then there is a label that states Coney...rabbit. Of course when I goggled Beaver Hats, I came up with a kazillion links. Would this be the maker name? Dont want to say its Beaver if it aint..:eusa_doh:

I have an odd question for ya:

On a #52 hat Block, about how many inches do the sides go straight up before they break into the dome, and also, what degree of taper are the front and the back (ballpark)?

I can't answer unfortunately, but it does bring a thought to mind. With CAD and 3d printing, it should be super easy to replicate old blocks if only the right people could be connected.
