Hi Folks

I am waiting on my first Cavanagh fedora to arrive soon. I was just wondering is there a really good cleaning brush to use for cleaning my new vintage hat? Any suggestions?
TIA for all comments and opinions.
Best regards

So I think I read here that Akubra hats tend to run a bit small. Can anyone attest to that? I found Kiandra model for sale semi-locally but if there's no chance it will fit my 58.5 dome with a little work then I don't want to bother the seller and waste his/her time or mine.
Thanks!

Mine have run spot on or a touch large new out of the box.
They draw up just fine.

Akubras generally run true to size.

The exception is the Akubra Federation. The block it's made from is actually a half-size smaller than it's stated size, so you might order it one size up, particularly if you choose the Imperial over the Deluxe.

It's also important to note that the perception of fit can be influenced by the shape of the block of the hat. For example, the Campdraft and Federation have a more oval-shaped block in comparison to the rounder Squatter, Sydney/Fedora, etc...

If that Kiandra has been cared for (not left out in the sun or a hot car), it should work.

Sweet, thanks again! We'll see how it goes. I saw some interesting bashes of that hat online so I hope it fits and I can get it at a good price.

OK, I have tried several ways to post photos to a post. I read the FAQ and tried before and after the link, tried that with different link versions. I tried the pop up photoloader as URL and copied from my computer. I resized twice and retried via copy from my computer.
All fail or instead of photos only the text of the link posts. My linked photos are on Flickr if that matters.
I have attached photos before but it has been a while. What gives?

It's
. You might be forgetting the slash.

Just post an attempt. We can press Reply and view your post to see what went wrong.

Also, if you use the forum photo uploader and use URL, you must uncheck the box that says "retrieve locally."

I am extremely new to fedoras. I purchased my first one less than a month ago. I know how to clean and shape felt hats. But today I received my first panama hat.

My question, is how do I clean and shape my panama hat. Does it even need cleaning? I am afraid steaming will hurt the fibers or remove color as it is a Nogal fedora (i.e. darker).

I'm looking just to shape the brim a little bit. The front is not curled up, and it's not down where I want it. It's kind of in limbo somewhere in the middle haha.

Thanks!

If the brim is flexible you can skip steaming. I have shaped a straw hat brim using two methods. I have sat the brim on a table and put some books on it and let the rest of the hat hang off. After awhile check it and see what shape it takes and go from there. Also I have used a drinking glass with straight sides and held the brim to it while watching TV. I used some felt hat stiffener on it to help for it would try to go back after some time. On a colored hat I would want to try a spot underneath to check for discoloration first. Personally I would try and skip any stiffener if possible.

I have seen reference to 'pancake hats' being worn by men in the mid to late 1920s. I am not familiar with the term, but guess it is a wide-brimmed, flat crowned hat. Does anyone have any photos of the hats it might be referring to?
(Note - it was a US newspaper referring to British hats)

I picked up a Open Road style Resistol Beaver 100 today for 9 dollars. As the name of the buyer was embossed on the sweat band and it was local, I Googled him and found that he died in the early sixties. I figure the hat was from the fifties. Where does the Beaver 100 fit in the quality line up for Resistols in this time period.

A resistol 100 would have cost 100 dollars when new. A lot of money in the early '60s, when you could pick up a good quality fur felt resistol for $12.50. Top of the line.

Are "crushable" felt hats "shapable"?

Hi. I am new to wearing hats. I have been reading about hats and have one question I could not find the answer to:
Are "crushable" felt hats "shapable"? If I attempt to shape a crushable hat will it just bounce back to its original shape?
Is there a way to shape a crushable felt hat?

I have a "crushable" felt fadora hat with the brim curved up over the ears, cowboy hat style.
I rather have the brim flat. What is the best way to flatten the brim? This is the hat:
http://www.amazon.com/Scala-Classic...343524296&sr=1-1&keywords=australian+hat+felt
It looks like a flat rim in the picture, but mine has the rim curved up over the ears.

Thank you.
