Another Diamond Dave J-100

Along with some other forum members, I was tempted by DD's new lower pricing, and ordered a J-100. Unlike everyone else, I chose to go with his standard steerhide. I specified Talon repro zippers in nickel with brown zipper tape on the sleeves. The steerhide is 3 oz. Horween Essex leather, which is vegetable tanned in the same manner as Horween's Shell Cordovan. Dave receives it in a mid-brown color and then dyes it black himself, as well as adding a top coat. Supposed to be very soft but equally durable. The pictures below are Dave's, will ship today so that I receive the jacket in 2 to 3 days. Fit pics to follow if it arrives before surgery day, otherwise half a fit pic with the rest of the jacket just hanging down.

That is going to age really nicely. I like the leather zipper pulls. A nice touch. Mind if I ask why you specified steerhide? I've been in contact with DD myself for a J-100. I'm seriously leaning seal brown goatskin and I have several HH jackets and want something different. He has a nice veg tanned goatskin.

With everyone going for the Shinki, I just wanted to try something different, especially when I heard that the steerhide was a high quality Horween product. I also really like the Buco label with the steer's head on it.

For what it's worth, I love my Aero Board Racer in veg-tanned goat and couldn't be happier that I went that route with that jacket.

Your board racer partly inspired me choosing goatskin for my (possible) J-100. The only bad part is that there isn't a Buco label with a bad ass looking goat on it. I don't think Aero even has a goatskin label (like HH and steerhide).

Very nice, i hope it fits!

It's weird because there is no consistency/logic behind the way he attaches the sleeves to the body. My jacket and technovoxe's jacket have the back seam and sleeves seams aligned.
Your jacket and a few others i have seen from him have the sleeve seams an inch below the back seam.

I wonder what the deal is with this?

Here are mine and Technovox's to compare, clear difference:

It's a good question and I have no idea what the answer might be. Interestingly, I had some correspondence with another forum member who has one on order, and that member noted that they hoped that theirs didn't line up, as most originals seem to not have the seams aligned. I'm not sure if they naturally come together on certain size jackets, if sleeve length influences the pattern, etc...

I hope mine turn out as beautiful as yours, Pawineguy! But I choose the Shinki since it's been awhile that I wanted a garment made in this leather.

@Carlos840 I have notice the same thing about the yoke and sleeves seams and ask Dave to make sure they aren't aligned when I place my order.

Don't think it's a size issue, as mine is also a size 44, well the tag under the label says 44, but the one in the pocket says size 42, so who know?
Either way the sizes are close enough that i don't think it's a pattern difference.

SpeedRcrX: Unfortunately i didn't even know both possibilities were a thing when i ordered. I kinda like having them aligned, but then i am also annoyed at it because it's not accurate compared to most originals...

It's because you raised this issue that I think to specifically ask to not have aligned seams.

I really wanted the most accurate J-100 possible.

Hope mine will turn out as beautifully as Pawineguy's Buco.

Looks great pawnieguy! Hope it fits and you are happy with it...cant wait to see the fit pics.

I just checked mine and I have a small gap between the two seems, only about 1/2 inch. I'm not really bothered either way but probably prefer a small gap as people have mentioned, its probably closer to the originals.

Good to see Dave is pumping out some more great jackets lately.

Interesting that the black dye does not result in a completely black jacket from the outset. Rather, there remain hints of the original brown color in several places. I suspect the brown will show through very quickly in other places as well, and the brown tone will ultimately predominate. As such, the brown zipper tape was a good choice.

Looks awesome!! I've been told by other customers of his that his steerhide is absolutely fantastic! Horse is obviously extremely popular, but quite a few jacket makers seem bemused by this, as the steer is also incredible. Congrats Chris, that looks superb.

That's not supposed to be the end result but we shall see in a few months. Once the dye is applied and sealed, it should be much more permanent in nature, with just the typical "high spot" wear points and in areas of high flex. I suspect that the jackets that we see fading almost immediately to brown were not sealed. Why he left some subtle brown spots I am not sure, but am ok with it as I do want some of that to eventually come through. The brown zipper tapes seem to predominate the originals, which is why I specified it that way.

CLARIFICATION: I reached out to Dave about the brown that shows in the images. That is only color coming from a warming light reflector he uses to photograph the jacket. I've been assured that the jacket is 100% black, and that the top coat is very sturdy so that no brown will be showing through for quite some time. I'll add my own crappy photos showing this once the jacket arrives.

Maybe it's just the angle of my pics, but the back and sleeve seams don't actually align on mine. They are off by about 3/8 inch or so. Not much, but still off. Here's a closer pic...

This is looking to be a stunning Buco- the heavier steerhide will drape differently than the horsehide, and along with the overdye black it should take on a very unique and authentic look. I'd love to see some fit pictures...especially after you wear it in a bit.

Nice looking jacket PG!
I look forward to this exchange in a year or two ;)
Sorry Dan, I've got first dibs on this one when PA tires of it. :D Not only am I closer in size to him than you, I also live closer as well, only separated by the Mason-Dixon line instead of the other end of the planet. ;)
