Here's one of my ancestors. It's my grandfather Jan Steur on the left there wearing what looks like a good fedora. I have later pictures of him in hats, but those are more stingy brims. Didn't inherit any of his hats (he died way before I had an interest in them). Very interesting man. Widower in his early forties and had to raise his nine children by himself. Worked as a barber and a cobbler. Played the church organ for more than sixty years in his spare time (surprised he had any). The man next to him wears the local dress of Volendam (these days considered the national dress of Holland but in fact very much a local thing). In 1960 still a fairly common sight, these days all but gone completely (except for the tourist trade).

I've posted this before but will post again with more detail. This is my grandfather. During the Great Depression he took a job out of town just to get work & keep the family afloat. They didn't have a car so he would catch a ride with others and be gone all wk, returning home on weekends. Based on several factors I believe this pic was probably taken during that time. My father would have been ~2-3 yrs old at the time.
