I'm particularly a fan of the 20's hats. Nice crowns, and I think you have a knack for getting overwelts.

That's an excellent question. The logo is very faded on the silk lining, so I can only make out a semicircle of medals, and below that the crowned initials "C & K".


Inside the sweatband, there's a paper label showing the size and a logo: the words "trade mark" above the picture of a derby hat. Below the derby, it says "C & K - registered June 15, 1880".


Perhaps James Powers could help us out with this?

Don't know what Powers has up his sleeve (aside from
a clean diaper), but my old Crofut and Knapp hat has a logo
in the liner with medals and the numbers on the medals,
presumably years of awards, are 1858 and 1893. No reference
to a registration date, though some of the writing is faded.

The 20s grey Stetson has the classiest overwelt I have
ever seen. Love the panama homburg, too (and all of them!).

My biggest frustration is finding pre WWII lids. Almost all of mine are postwar. That is a magnificent collection!

And I sympathise about trying to get self-portraits to show a smile. Sometimes I think I'm grinning like an idiot but the picture comes out looking solemn. And if I do smile very broadly, it always looks as if my eyes are closed. Can't win.

The brown hat from the "Oviatt's" men's store is the only nice hat I've ever found in a thrift store.


Every single one of the other hats came from eBay.


In Los Angeles today, there are practically no vintage clothing stores (or antique stores/malls, for that matter) that sell pre-1960s men's fedoras. They're just not around, unless you get lucky at an estate sale or garage sale.
