Pleasant surprise

An unexpected turn of events moments ago when I happened to stumble across a year-old moonstone Fed IV Deluxe in my size, newly posted to eBay. The opening bid was a steal, but figuring that would shoot up once folks started to notice, I snatched it for the buy-in-now price, which was still significantly lower than the current price plus shipping at Hats Direct.

Still waiting for my Stylemaster to arrive, and biding my time on ordering a Campdraft (and now I want it in both silverbelly and BG, thanks to some recent posts here). But I never thought I'd wind up with another Fed. This is turning out to be a great Friday. Happy weekend, everybody ...

Take a look at the hat Alan Ladd wore in ...

.... "Shane" ! Take and roll the front sides of the brim closer, tighten up the front pinch, drag thru some of that clay soil you have up there in Tenn. when it's wet and VOILA - Shane's lid !! Having grown up watching westerns back then, it is really a nice interpratation of that style of western hat worn then.

Theinterchange: that's a great looking Campdraft! You've made a great purchase, for sure. That color in particular does seem to be low in stock just about anywhere these days, huh?


Neophyte: Hmm, the Overlander is actually a great looking hat, good choice there. I think it does look western though, it reminds me of the hat Clint Eastwood wore in Rawhide. Come to think of it, I wouldn't mind getting one in sand eventually. Yet another hat to consider.

Sand is a rockin' color, I'll admit. It's sort of a yellowish, light tan, but under sunlight it looks kinda creamy/off-white. The effect makes it an incredibly versatile color.

By the way, if any of you haven't yet, try wearing your Akubra while simultaneously listening to Slim Dusty's recording of "The Man from Snowy River". Sent chills down my spine .

You made a wise decision! I LOVE my Federations, well ALL of my Akubras are fantastic hats.

Just so you know, carbon grey has a lot of blue in it... like this.

Okay... I owe everyone an on head photo of the CD... I waited too long yesterday [it was a crazy day] to get an outside shot and came up with dimly lit or flash washed out specimens... none of which I'd feel comfortable showing online. lol

Will get one much earlier today.

It is a larger and gratifying world when you start shaping hats to suit your taste. I find it hard to think of buying factory creased hats since becoming used to doing the shaping myself. Matter of fact, I only own one factory creased hat and it's a straw.

What sort of books do you collect? [making a somewhat "wild" guess from your avatar, I'd say you have at least one volume of Sherlock Holmes in your library]

I'm a perfectionist, so it may take me a while to adjust the pinch just right...

I'm afraid that Sherlock Holmes is at the moment rather underrepresented in my bookshelf. My method of collecting books is just wading through eBay or local antiquarian bookshops and stumbling over interesting books, either very beautifully bound or illustrated, or relating to a very intriguing subject. As I'm somewhat of a Renaissance man with a wide range of interests, it's not hard to come by something that I really want to buy. I have, for example, books on natural history, theatre, medicine, mythology, and art. Most of them pre-1900. Then I have some literary classics such as very beautiful antique copies of Alice in Wonderland and Faust. I aim for bargains, and I'm not picky about editions.

Once I discovered a 15-volume mid-1930s encyclopedia, bound in leather in near mint condition... for free at the "junk department" of a local thrift shop. (All items that don't sell in time get thrown in that sad little corner. Apparently, nobody had bothered to haul the hefty set home. I bothered.)
