Then again, I say to myself,"Man, what a deal! I'll be saving money in the long run." Then, if I check out the FL, I see another money-making deal like the Peters Bros. Milan I got today. I'm rolling in cash! I realize this is called "addictive thinking" by those psychoanalytic wet-blankets, but I'm getting a nice little collection going.

Yeah, me too. I'm trying to keep my "collection" at a manageable number, but over the last year or so it seems I get a new hat and almost immediately see another one I want. :frusty: If anyone would have told me 10 years ago that I'd soon be a dedicated hat wearer I'd have told them they'd lost their mind; I guess the joke's on me. lol

I try to keep the brakes on, but I've also gotten into playing with and refurbishing old ones. So now, in addition to wanting that next CD, Stetson, or D'Aquino (while planning a couple of customs), I keep pulling the trigger on lower priced hats on eBay I'm looking to play with.

I paid for the cheap shipping also and HD emailed me the shipping notification which included a tracking number. I pUnched it to postaltrackt.com and it work for USPS.
My previous experiences ordering from Hats Direct were the same as Mr. Roberts', i.e. no tracking information was provided. But my last purchase from them was nearly two years ago, so things may have changed since then. I suppose I'll find out soon. :D
I ordered my Fed IV earlier today, and when I received my "your hat will ship in the next post" e-mail this evening it did indeed include a tracking number. I guess they've had some hats go missing somewhere along the way over the years and decided this might be a good idea. [huh]

I'm trying to hold to the practice of... buy a hat, then sell a hat. My tastes are changing as I go, so as long as I'm "replacing" ones I no longer wear.... it seems rational, right? :)

Ordered an Akubra Arena western, it's on it's way, also waiting on a Resistol western straw and a Melegrani fedora that's due to ship sometime next month.

This must stop:)

2 1/2" brim

My Campdraft after trimming to even and narrow the brim to 2.5".
It seems to suit me better this way, though I learned that getting even hand stitching on the binding is a PITA.

Caught the Gary Cooper segment of It's a Big Country: An American Anthology (1952) on TCM this Sunday. Here is a pic from it showing his hat: http://s733.photobucket.com/user/troilus09/media/pics/itsabigcountry2.jpg.html I have to say that's the best-looking Western hat I've ever seen. Do you think a Campdraft could be shaped to resemble that? Is the crown high enough -- and is the brim wider than that? Cooper's, I think, is a hat he wore for some years, and the side brim curl is probably from a lot of handling, but it makes the brim look smaller than it probably is.

I'd guess a CD might come close but I'm sure you can locate a Stetson or Resistol cowboy hat and get that look easily.

It's merely that most cowboy hats have even broader brims than Cooper's appears to have. A Campdraft, I'd think, would start with a shorter brim and not need to be trimmed.

Short answer; No. that hat is at least a 6 inch crown and it's a much lighter thinner felt than a Campdraft. Brim looks ballpark, though. That's not to say you couldn't come up with something similar that you might like.
You'd have better luck with an older cowboy hat. It might even come pre-"distressed" to help achieve the look.

Paul;
If you want a hat to look like Cooper's it should have a lot more brim than a bankers hat ie. CD/OR
More like 4 inches or otherwise it will lose the correct proportions and not look at all like his.
If you are of the normal distribution of sizes say 7-1/4 there are a lot of used Resistlols/stetsons to be found Or even a cheap straw to play with. If you don't like a western don't wear one
