This box was thin cheesy junk. Merchants know postal employees aren't too concerned about parcel integrity. Merchants should anticipate that something heavy will be tossed on top of the hat box and should adjust accordingly. I will order from them again but will request my package be double boxed in better cardboard. On a positive note, Hatsdirect was really easy to deal with and shipped my hat without delay.

That's a shame. When I received my second Fed IV in October of 2013, it arrived in the same type of carton as my first one; clearly, something has changed. I'm planning to order another Fed IV at the end of the month, and now I'm concerned that it may not survive the trip. :eek:hwell:

No shame. It worked out fine in the end. I wonder if yours will land in your back yard and then get a free trip to West Virgina as mine did. does the Fed come in Heritage. What color ae you getting?

Well...looks like I made a sizing mistake (typical newbie)... After getting the Campdraft in, it was larger than my head, which was expected based on what I've read here. But I also noticed that although it was resting on my ears, it still did not reach the point where I actually measured my head.

I have been used to wearing visors and my Tilley...the visor fit just below the knot on the back of my head, which left it below the tops of my ears. I wear my Tilley in the same place on the back of my head...but it has an arched design...the hole for my head is not all on one plane, but curves down behind my ears. When the Akubra goes on, the back doesn't reach the knot on my head before the sides rest on my ears...so the proper place to measure for these kind of hats is higher, obviously. So I re-measured my head today in the proper spot...and I'm a 7 5/8 rather than a 7 3/4...which translates to a 61 rather than 62.

From your experience...will this shrink down that much?

Thanks....

I think that it probably will. You can pad it and wait for it to "settle in"or,on occasion,I've dampened the sweat on the inside and then put it in a warm/hot place to dry.

When I received my CD last winter it came down to my ears, so I tucked some rolled-up pieces of paper towel into the band and forgot about them (not too classy but they worked). Since it's been a bit warm down here the last few months, I've only worn it occasionally. The other night I wore the hat and it felt kind of tight. Then I remembered the paper bits. I took them out and it fits perfectly now.

^^ Had the same thing happen to me recently. I was alarmed at how much larger it was. The good folks here told me to wet the sweatband with distilled water and stow it someplace warm, which I did (in my hot attic). Fits nicely now.

I'm a true 24", 61 cm, 7 5/8 & have a 62 Akubra that now fits as good as the 61's I have.

Thanks y'all. I knew I could live with it with padding in it...but would REALLY prefer it to fit without them. I'll try it this weekend.... :)
You can also unroll cotton balls into strips (which is what they are before they're rolled up. Nice and soft.

I am more liberal about leaving my oversized hats in the hot car.

Or do as I do, wet the inside of the sweat with hot water, leave it turned down and place it on a lampshade turn the lamp on, (60 watt bulb works well) in less than an hour it will have shrunk and while still warm turn the sweat in and wear it for a while.

I wouldn't know if it did venture to West Virginia because I opt for the regular air mail shipping option that doesn't include tracking. This time around it'll be Moonstone.

Has anybody ever tried the "hot room" method with another brand of hat? Or is this just unique to Akubras (I get the impression it is)?

I've used the lampshade method on several brands of hats, always worked. Never needed to do it with Akubras as they seem to shrink on their own as do others. If I don't wear them for awhile I have to jack them back to size.

Great idea, thanks. I buy a variety of old hats and likewise there are a variety of fits. Some 7 1/4s fit perfectly and some 7 3/8s fit perfectly. Your methods gives some element of control over the process for those that are a bit big.

I've been out of pocket for a while, but it doesn't look like the popularity of the Camp Draft has waned any in my absence. I got mine about 7 or 8 years ago and still haven't gotten tired of it.

for the record before I say this... I've never done anything like this to my hats before

a couple of my Akubra hats still fit very slightly loose ... I like my hats pretty tight...

I've had some reduction tape inside since getting them

today I wet the inside of the sweat on two of them and put them in the car for only about an hour ... the result was pretty fantastic

they both fit exactly how I like them to now and the reduction tape is gone

awesome !!!!
