Dear fellow Loungers,

Today my new Aero custom jacket was delivered. I am thrilled. It is a jacket from a Levis contract Aero made around 2002. At the time the jacket was made in russet jerky HH and whipcord and in russet jerky HH. Due to the quite complicated pattern the whole contract was made by Julie Leitch, as was my jacket.

This is one of the original Levis jackets, strangely named "Rockabilly" by Levis.



Since I already have a russet goatskin jacket I chose the thinnest seal jerky HH available. Ken advised me that the style is best suited to thin and flexible leather. The only other deviations from the original I ordered were a gun pocket with button and loop closure in the right hand facing, weathered grant tartan lining with brown cotton drill in the sleeves and a curdory strip at the hem. The cateye corozo buttons were Aero's choice. Ken suggested to reverse the adjustment straps at the sides to make them functional.

Ken told me since they unearthed the pattern in the process of making mine they are going to introduce this jacket as a regular model soon. They have sourced a new suede that looks like a 1930s suede as well as a new source for a superb goatskin that would both work beautifully for this style.

Possibly my all time favorite style. Glad Aero may be bringing it back into their lineup. I will be very tempted. Perhaps the only thing different that I would ask for is the smaller Bootlegger style collar.

Personally I'd go for a longer , 3/4 length , with smaller collar .. I can but dream

Oh, yeah. I DO like that jacket, but, I agree with some of the other lads: I'd want to tame that collar a bit for mine. I do hope Ken follows through on this pattern. Nice. Thanks for the pics, but, some more, please.

Funnily enough, my first musing om viewing those photos was as to whether Ken might bring it into the regular line (there is a precedent for this: The Aero Speedster, introduced in 2013, is the design that Aero worked up for another LVC jacket, based on a 30s original). The bottom end of Rudie's OP confirms they are taking it into regular production.... I can see why some find it a bit 70s, though to my mind that's simply because the 70s copped so much from the 30s & 40s.... It would look superb in a good Aero-aproved goat. The russet would be extra-tempting....

When I inquired about the possibility of doing a one off in September they said they wanted to take it into regular production again. They unearthed the patterns to see if it would work for me and what size I needed. Many emails went back and forth before placing the order. I thought about asking for a smaller collar, but what the heck! The 1930s original had the same collar, so it's good enough for me. Many German jackets from the era seem to have large collars.

It is a very trim fit. I definitely can't wear a sweater underneath. It is a size 39, and a 40 would be better in the chest. But the pattern is pretty straight down and I wanted a trim fit at the hips, so the next bigger size (a 41) wouldn't work at all.

I wanted a bit of variety, so I chose the seal jerky horse this time. If it was my first jacket I most certainly would have chosen goatskin. Goat is such a great and underappreciated hide. BTW, Ken believes that goat is the leather of the near future as more and more customers seem to move away from the very heavy horse and steer.

I agree with you re the collar, I like it a lot. Interesting Ken's seeing more demand for goat.... I'm still rather a fan of the FQHH, but I've long appreciated a range of hides. It's nice to see more interest in the other alternatives. Interesting how fashions change that way.... back when I was first round here, it was all FQHH and one-piece bakcs or folks didn't want to know... now there's much more openess to other hides and multi-piece backs too. I'm sure it helps that Aero being such a trusted brand have worked on these things too.

Love the buttons and the Hercules-like stitching on the front panels. And, yes, I like the collar, too. Very period-appropriate, I think.

But that super-trim fit? Ugh.

Note to self: Place on wish list for when I drop the post-45 belly and return to a 34-inch waist.

Is it just me or is this very VERY similar to the Tyler Durden Fight Club jacket?...even the back is the same. Much better and more wearable colour choice than the red though!

It's the collar which is very similar to the Tyler Durden jacket and is giving it a 70s vibe. Although after the collar and the fact it's single breasted button front it really doesn't bear too much resemblance to the Fight Club jacket.
