A Stormy Day and a Father's Duty

I wonder if anyone else on the list has had this experience...

It was stormy here in eastern Massachusetts today, the snow falling at a rate nearing two inches an hour. My fifteen-year-old son decided to walk into the village center. To stay warm and dry he grabbed a mink felt fedora made for me by Gary White. It is a marvelous hat, mid gray, soft and supple, probably irreplaceable. It was a perfect fit. Now he thinks of the hat as his own. I guess I have to let it go and have Gary put in a new leather punched with my son's initials. I lost a fine shaving brush in this manner and I suspect I will continue to provide the essentials to my boy as he becomes a man.

When I was a teen I loved to dress and look sharp!! So did my father. In fact, when we wore the same size I wore his clothes, especially his leather jacket. Well needless to say, he was not a happy man about it.

I have a 3 year old he has his own little guitar, keyboard and Christmas tree. He has learned to leave my things alone. It is working for now. :) :)

It's a dad's duty to let the boys take their stuff! I "borrowed" a few of my dad's hats, army gear, and hunting clothes in my youth.
I would be happy if my son does the same.

You mean he doesn't already? ;) :p
My three year old took off with one of my newsboy caps and thinks of it as his now. The wierd thing is that it is a 7 1/2 and fits his 7 head just fine. It fits both of us. :eusa_doh:

When my boy was born I bought a signet ring. Inscribed inside is my birth date and his birth date. I knew before I purchased the ring I would give it to him and I hope he gives it to his son.

The point, I am just borrowing it until he can appreciate the ring's significance. He wears my hats now and he emulates me. I expect him to appropriate my things, but, not my guitars yet...pleaseee..;)

You know what they say..."only difference in men & boys is the price of their toys!" :D
Which reminds me...in addition to my fedora and shaving brush, my son has also begun to appropriate my Leicas and lenses. Seems my boy is aging rapidly, though I grow younger with each endowment that is transfered to him!

I dunno. You might want to take a page from my Mother's book. She has these great little 14k yellow gold bow earrings with a little diamond chip in the center. She got them as a bridesmaid gift sometime in the 50's and she loves them. Well, in my late teens, I loved them too! I "borrowed" them with permission. Days rolled into weeks. My Mother politely asked me to return them. Weeks rolled into months. My Mother politely asked me again. The calendar pages kept turning. Finally, she walked into my room and firmly asked me to produce the earrings. With no other choice, I went to my box only to discover the earrings were missing! I wanted to vomit, thought I had lost them and was on the spot. My Mom let me squirm a moment or two and then said, "I took them back yesterday. Next time I let you borrow something, be kind enough to return it." ....that reminds me, I need to give her back the signet ring I've had since May! lol
