Can you describe the fabric? Weave, texture, fabric content?

Definitely rayon. I checked it against ties marked with their fabric content (silks and rayon) and it is easy to feel the difference.
It's a very smooth weave.

Wow, kinda cool. My dad can tie dye, I should find some rayon and get him to tie die it for me. Then persuade my wife to make it into a necktie.

Or... do you suppose a tie-dye bowtie would look good?

Feraud is dead right, as usual. These ties --which were made from the late '30s to the late '40s, though some rare examples date back to the late '20s-- were made of rayon 'poplin' sheeting, the same sort of thin rayon that was used for '30s and '40s hawaiian shirts, blouses and dresses.

I agree, but I think the weave is a little looser than your typical hawaiian, or maybe I am just thinking of later ones. i have owned and seen shirts like this, but they are a bit different from the very fine smooth silky rayon hawaiians I have seen.

Another dead give away as to era is the stitching. It is a bit different looking than you would see in a later tie. The minute I saw that stitching, I knew the era.

I thought of the Sultan tie dyed last evening while watching G-Men.
James Cagney wears what looked to be a striking zebra stripe tie. It looked great!
Does anyone know the reference or have a tie like it?

Feraud, the most 'famous' zebra stripe tie on film appears briefly in Casablanca (see below).

Polo Ralph Lauren produced zebra stripe ties a few years back. They pop up on eBay from time to time, and tend to fetch high prices.

A companion to the other tie I posted.
This tie has more of the color dyed out and is not as attractive as the purple one.

I am still on the lookout for a zebra striped tie.

When I first saw it, I thought 40s or 50s... I have seen a few "bleed" ties and even own a very unique one I'll post some day... lol

Then, when I saw the labels, 30s came right to mind!

Great ties! I really think it's fun to see something we associate with the 60s or 70s had its origins before style went south in a hand basket!:D

Note that they've put the V in Javanese in a different colour thread. Just so you know it's not Japanese, of whom the US was becoming wary in the 1930s.

Considering Baron Kurtz's comment above and looking at the two labels together makes me wonder if the tie without the highlighted V is older or not than period noted by BK.

Makes me wonder, too, Feraud. [huh] At any rate, I love both ties, especially the purple one. I need to upload a tie that I just bought at a thrift store; it is not tie-died but rather painted, with a multi-colored, wavy design. The lining and "label" indicate c.early '50s, but the "design" looks pure late '60s.

I too think the purple one is nice. My 15 year old likes the other one which he can wear to school if he respects the age of item.
Please do post that painted tie. I would be curious to see if the experts think it is painted from the period or done later.
