A hat for every occasion?

Currently, I just own a grey single-crease crown fedora and I consider it a dress accessory which means I wear it whenever I wear a suit. My office has a very casual dress code but about six months ago I figured "screw it" and began dressing in suits whenever I felt like it. At first I got the tired old jokes about being dressed for a job interview but now I'm starting to notice that a few coworkers have started to subtly upgrade their wardrobes too!

Personally, most people I see wearing fedoras with casual clothes are young people wearing them as gimmicks rather than sophisticated people wearing them as accessories. I try to treat my hat the way any man from the 1950s would view his. I'll be buying a Panama soon and will likely wear that on my more casual days (at least in the summer!)

Agreed. I too am rubbing off on my friends. But, to the best of my knowledge, men traditionally wore nice straw hats "even" with more formal attire in summer. I could be wrong. I have a nice milan-weave with a fabric-finished edge that Art just fixed up for me, and I have no problem at all seeing myself wearing it with a suit, or with a jacket and tie anyway. I'll post pics at some point. A nice straw hat is, well, really, really nice.

While it's true that some hipsters are attracted to fedoras as an attention-getting novelty, I hope that these people will grow to love fedoras. Many of us were first attracted to fedoras because it seperated us from the pack, made a bold statement or made us look like our heroes of yore. If a young kid picks up a fedora because it's a conversation starter at the bar, I have no problem with that. We should applaud their interest and provide advice when they want to learn more. Even Jack White of the White Stripes seems to be having a love affair with hats these days.

A gimmick? Perhaps, but I'd rather see a rockstar in a suit and homburg than a t-shirt with "F@$% Off" across the front and $300 ripped jeans.

I was wondering what hat everyone would wear for different events/activities/etc. and, on a forum that's been around this long, there is no need to start a new thread... just bump an old thread. Though it seems every photo from the past has faded into the ethersphere. But what hat do you wear for everyday? Mowing the lawn? Fishing? Hunting? Sunday go-to-meetin'? Etc. Etc. Etc...

Interesting thread. As my collection has grown, I have noticed that some hats are gravitating to more specific uses. Right now, I’m trying to decide which hat to wear on our Thanksgiving trip, since it will involve smoking the turkey with my son. I have a couple of hats that have been go-tos for outdoor activities this summer, but I’m not sure about cooler weather. Stay tuned.
