I'll bet this sounds a bit silly, but I've always wondered about this. When you were traveling and going to be a bit adventuresome, but not safari adventuring... (ie maybe Europe travel?) what kind of hat would you wear? Especially during the 20s-30s, but also a bit earlier.

A good wide brimmed felt like a cowboy hat or a safari style hat.

Most fedoras were saved for the city.

Campaign hats like the ones worn by the military are also known as camping hats and were bought by the general public as adventure gear.

Also, you could always go with an Indy fedora. It's has the 30's look, and you can get away with wearing it in the cities as well. -Mulceber

Are you wondering what you should wear today for such adventures, or what the fellas wore back then? I imagine the major considerations were location, formality, and weather. Like, wearing a different hat for cruising about the Greek Isles in the summer versus visiting Aunt Agatha in the English countryside during the fall. (I don't know what one should wear in these situations, I was just thinking of scenarios.)

The interesting thing in this case is that although the question is good you asked the wrong people. You see most of the people at Fedora Lounge are fedora lovers. They care too much about their fedoras.
True adventure cannot even ensure that you will return from it, and what should then be sad about hats.
Wear whatever you want. If you want to travel Europe wear something that will give you class. But which will not make you look fake.
I noticed that people treat you differently when you wear a fedora. You can take control of the situation much more easily. And if you play your cards right you can get a lot of respect.
About adventuring in nature, forget it. There is almost no more nature in the world today. Those little patches of nature that exist are so unique that way to dress is strictly limited by the territory. When you go there people will tell you what you have to wear.

Agreed. Since I started wearing a fedora, things have been much different. I feel more confident and people have introduced themselves to me out of the blue. It's a neat thing.

My best advise would be to wear whatever pleases you and suits the circumstances. Who cares what the pissants on any continent think?
