Back when that abomination was still a relatively new phenomenon someone was able to get a photo of the inside of the crown. Apparently the hat itself is made from very thin felt to keep it light, then they took elastic that looked about an inch wide (maybe more) and tacked in into the crown of the hat in a roughly octagonal shape, so that it stretched from tack to tack rather than conform to the shape of the crown like a normal sweatband would. Once someone puts the hat on his/her head, it's the tension on that elastic strap that keeps it in place on the wearer's head; it really doesn't fit like a proper hat would/should. Also, allegedly, the height factored into Pharell Williams selecting that hat because his wife is two inches taller than he is, and even taller when wearing high heeled shoes, so... An odd creation, but here we are still talking about it a decade later.
