Why do you think DDL's hat is wool?
Justdog, I was just remembering that Art Fawcett used to rent hats and such to film makers. Also, a lot of fur felts can be found in rental agencies, costume departments of film studios, colleges, universities, and professional as well as community theatre...
A Stetson 100 cost $100.00 when it was originally sold. Price vs felt composition may not be accurate comparisons.
I do not have a Stetson 100 but my guess is that it is not 100% beaver felt if it does not state Clear Beaver on the sweatband and/or the liner.
I have a Stetson 5X Clear...
Here's poor picture of a TWA pin I won on ebay today.
The seller's description:
Vintage TWA airplane pin back. Is from the Propeller days. This plane has four props. Measures about 1 by 3/4inches. I assume it was one by TWA employee. Is silver color with the TWA on the wings in red...
Great Thread
This is the kind of subject that I find fascinating. There is such a different sensibility in the UK. History is so much more immediate and appreciated. Or so it seems to me.
Torpedo, FRankly, you're a braver man than I. I'd never have tried so many different ways to clean that binding. It appears that, the only thing you haven't done is to remove the binding altogether.
After trying all the things you already have, I'd send it to a pro for restoration.
I absolutely agree. I recommended this hat to someone else on the FL but do not believe they were the bidder. Had this been anywhere near 7 5/8, I'd have been in the hunt. Cavanagh edge, 7X, retiree from Stetson, and in the original box all make this a desirable hat.
Buttered Rum Batter
OK, Rachael, it's time to spill the beans. What Buttered Rum Batter do you recommend? THere's a cold front moving in tonight. I'll need it soon! :)
Great Resistol!
THat Resistol is a real beauty Razzman. It also gives me a new idea for a Borsalino Stockman that JP cleaned and reblocked for me. ;) :)
Justdog, I was thinking 4 1/2 total. The pencil roll being about 1/2" of the total.
I believe the hat you have pictured would work well. You should be able to form the dents enough to get the proportions to work. Use some steam if the felt is too stiff to shape by hand.
Have some fun and...
It's too early to face this decision.
Great Sweater! :eusa_clap :eusa_clap :eusa_clap
Now I have to figure out what to wear for Christmas! :eusa_doh:
Arrrgh...the pressure! ;) :)
Nice hats!
Slim, You won two terrific hats in very different styles. I hope we get to see pictures of both with the creases as pictured. That Resistol is sweet and it has a Cattleman crease which I'm looking forward to seeing on you. I have no doubt that you can pull them both off very well.
