I’m a bit confused here.
I have never worried about any of my Akubra hats or my Rand’s getting rained on, so I’m a bit puzzled by the statement that a $200 Stetson needs “maintenance” if exposed to rain.

My personal opinion is that if a guy showed up in any small western town wearing that hat, there would at least be some snickering, if not outright displays of amusement.
I’m not altogether convinced that wearing the right hat will truly keep you “moving forward and improving yourself” so why not put that all aside and just enjoy the journey.
Wear what you like …… it’s your head, your hat, and your money.
Spend time in the Amazonian and other South American rain forests and you may come back with your head shrunk.
A possible problem is it will be the size of a large orange, so not many vintage hats will fit after all.

Note: it takes a real frog-strangler to soak a hat like this, or quite a while in a moderate rain. Even then, your head may not get wet. (maybe if it's unlined, all of my hats are lined)
I don’t own a fur felt hat that I haven’t worn in the rain, but mine are not vintage hats.
From what I remember, it rained in the 30s and 40s, and men wore their hats.
