Check out my English Tweed DB

Hello Peter, The Dege jacket is a little unusual with its hacking style cut at the front but as you say similar to a hunt coat at the rear. I do not recall often seeing such a jacket out in the field but would be interested to know if you have come across similar. I'm thinking about having...

New Gieves and Hawks - Ridiculous!

I can't say it does a lot for me, nor would it do much for me if anyone was able to convince me to try it on lol Much more my kind of thing is the off the peg Gieves & Hawkes tweed suit of mine that my wife currently has for auction on ebay (with my blessing I might add) as she thinks my...

    cuffs on trousers

To my mind it depends on the length of your legs, I'm under 6ft so go for 1.5ins.

    A second pair of trousers?

Yes I have suits with additional trousers as to my mind they are the item which takes more physical wear and pressure. I also have shooting suits with one pair of trousers and a pair of breeks.

Any clues as to whereabouts in the UK?

    Tell me about Harris Tweed?

As an aside bi swings (or action backs) are popular over here with the countrysports fraternity as they offer greater freedom of movement when mounting a rifle and swinging a shotgun. I have several suits and jackets with them for that very reason, several of which include a belt too. Such...

    Sad news

I have never been to Newquay but have obviously been following the reports of the fire in the media also the calls for local fire station to now be manned full time or at least during the summer.

    PROPER tea drinking

Seems perfectly reasonable however I do not hold out my little finger when taking tea. Purely coincidently my wife has just made a pot and in a few minutes will be bringing me a cup of tea, white, no sugar ...much as she does around this time every evening.

    Reproofing/Waxing a Barbour

I've never seen anyone use a gizmo like that, getting the garment warm is more important than heating the wax - if it's too hot it scorches the cotton anyway.

Yes it is quite something. I am somewhat reluctant to tell you that as far as I can recall it was around a 38" - sorry. As I say this was two or three years ago now, I think it sold for around the £150 mark. I really, really regret not going for it even if the chances of there being sufficient...

Check out my English Tweed DB

Spot on. I am determined to get something like this made before long.. The above appeared on ebay some three or four years ago, was by Dege and if it had not been a tad on the small size I would have snapped it up. If anyone sees anything similar in a 40 - 42 (note the Guards...

Check out my English Tweed DB

You are right that much countrywear is still traditional in nature but it is not just the upper 'classes' (much as I dislike to use the word in the socio-economic context) who wear tweed. It is of course commonly worn by many from all backgrounds out in the provinces for both casual and sporting...

    Reproofing/Waxing a Barbour

Drape the coat over a heating radiator or other moderate heat source and allow it to thoroughly warm up. Obtain a clean, lint free cloth and proceed to work in / wipe off the surplus wax. Alternatively use a hairdryer as a heat source. Work the hairdryer (or even an electric paint stripping...

Why do I hate the 1970s so much?

The 70's were generally ok for me. I reached and achieved several important and unforgettable milestones in the late 60's to mid '70's. The present (as it was back then) is what YOU make it.

is it safe to wear a WWII vintage leather flight jacket?

When I collected such things I would sometimes wear some of my genuine jackets ..but with care. I had a couple of particularly strong plain B3's that I tended to wear when I was out and about in my MB in the winter. In time the zips needed replacing so they went down to Gary Eastman. I never...

    Varieties of overcoat...

One of the theories is that it would allow staff to self alter their garment by cutting back to the appropriate line of stitching.
