I agree with sewing straight lines to start. Pillow covers and aprons are great to get the feel for the machine. And a skirt, a simple A-line, is a good option for a first garment. The first few pieces I made were with clearance fabric, not junk, just fabric on sale...off season fabric, etc...

I think red should be fine. Red is classic. Like ITG said, as long as it is a fresh manicure without chips (or the hair lines I get in mine when I do my manicure too late in the evening:o ). I would make sure that the red polish is part of a classic and conservative package...
There are also many sets of old radio programs on CD. Think The Shadow, Amos and Andy, etc. Check Ebay, do a search for "OTR" or "Old Time Radio". Good luck. I thinkk you are on the right track to find something she will enjoy.

I started wearing my undies over my garter belt about a year ago. I felt like a freak doing it...like I was being lazy. But, if I didn't, you're right, it took 20 minutes to detach and re-attach and get put back together.

Thank you! The price depends on where you find it. I have been fortunate to find a few people that are reasonablewith thier prices. Some of the antique malls try to charge "book value". If that were the case, this sharpener would have been two to three times what I paid for it.

I just heard a discussion on this on the radio this morning. The suggestions were whites (a chardonnay, a semi-sweet to dry reisling) or a lighter bodied red. Stay away from the Cabs.
