I would suggest catalogs to get a good idea of how outfits were put together from daywear to evening wear incuding shoes and accesories. They give you a broader range of what was available than what we find in vintage/thrift shops. They also give you a guide as to how the clothing should fit...

I know at both CVS and ULTA, you can return any item if you don't like the color-- even if you used it. I have done that many times when I get to the car and the color looks NOTHING like I thought it would. It has really reduced the size of my hideous lipstick collection.

Catalogs are a wealth of information from hairsyles to accessories, oh yeah, and clothes too. I have a few catalogs from the late 30s and early 40s. Oh to be able to place an order from there lol.

I haven't got around to posting pics of me playing with my hair yet...but when I do, this is what I want! I know people on the street will look at me like I have three heads regardless of how well coiffed my hair is. Now if someone here thinks my hair looks like my cat...

You could do the nude fishnets. I would go with a pair of backseam stockings. You can never go wrong with seams to complete a vintage (or vintage-looking) outfit.
When my hubby and I were out this past weekend, a guy asked him if we were going to a "50s dance or something". When he replied "no, I dress this way everyday." The guy seemed annoyed and just said "Oh, OK". lol
