Why do I hate the 1970s so much?

Some Loungers are just like members of any sub-culture, anywhere, anytime, hating that which is not like them. Punks, as I said before, were just another youth sub-culture, trying to annoy their predecessors and their parents, and they managed it perfectly. They were no different to Teds...

Pre '50 Non American Jazz Recommendations?

I can heartily recommend the Blue Brazil series (or at least Volumes 1 and 2) on Blue Note. The CDs feature tracks from EMI Brazil's 1960s and 70s jazz catalogue, with a nice range of music - great tracks by The Milton Banana Trio, Joyce, Elza Soares, Bossa 3, Quarteto Novo among others. Also...

Pre '50 Non American Jazz Recommendations?

Salsoul evolved away from its Latin roots to become probably the premier disco label, with little in the way of Latin rhythms, but since you mention Latin Disco you'll probably enjoy the Salsoul comps. Personally I love a lot of the Salsoul disco stuff: Loleatta Holloway's first Salsoul album...

Pre '50 Non American Jazz Recommendations?

There are lots of references on the net to the book in your link, but I can't find any sound samples of old Pinoy Jazz, just a site selling contemporary Filipino jazz. The best known jazz musician with a Filipino heritage must be Joe Bataan - an Afro-Filipino American, born in New York in 1942...

Pre '50 Non American Jazz Recommendations?

That sounds very strange. My dad was Filipino and he had several LPs of traditional Filipino music which me and my sisters used to snigger at in that typical "what-are-our-parents-like?" adolescent way. I'll have to take a listen to that link when I get home from work - I really can't imagine...

Let's See Your Vintage Inspired Office!

It may be a little too modern for you, but in 1950 Charles and Ray Eames designed a series of storage units for Herman Miller known as ESU (Eames Storage Units). The whole series was based around individual components that could be combined to make desks, tables and shelf units. You can...

    McGregor Drizzler or Baracuta G-9...

I bought one of the XL Drizzlers from eBay and the sleeve length on mine is 24" from the shoulder seam, and 19" from the armpit. I'm 5'10" and that's just about perfect on me, so it probably would be too short for you.

    On yer bike!

Lovely little films Mike - well found! I'm trying to get a classic looking Bianchi fixie through the Cycle To Work scheme. I've applied for my voucher, but the only drawback is that I have to buy the bike from Halfords. However, I've spoken to the Halfords C2W department and they reckon they...

    The Spanish Civil War

I've tried to be as neutral as possible throughout this thread, so thanks feltfan for this considered response. Also for the record, my sympathies lie entirely with the Spanish working- and peasant-classes who saw in the Republic a chance to finally have some control over their own lives...

    The Spanish Civil War

Why stop now? Since we're discussing historical events feel free to counter my points. I completely agree that atrocities were committed by both sides - in fact I wrote about the Red Terror myself earlier in the thread http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showpost.php?p=144547&postcount=60 - but I...

    The Spanish Civil War

In order to believe that you'd have to assume that Franco wanted Spain to become a multi-party democracy with a functioning parliament. If that were the case why did he not stand down and hold free elections at any time in post-WW2 Spain? American money began pouring in to the country in 1950...

    "D-Day" by Stephen E. Ambrose

Horsa gliders were used, like this: There's a short article about the attack on the bridges on the MOD site, which has a painting showing the third glider approaching Pegasus Bridge, but also an aerial photo showing the landed gliders in the field next to the bridge: And the...

Especially considering that the pilots navigated with just stopwatches and compasses.

Why do I hate the 1970s so much?

And you can add Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band (but they made swing-style disco so a lot of people will just dimiss them out of hand...)

Why do I hate the 1970s so much?

I had a great time in the 70s - I left school and started work in 1975 so I had some spending money, which all went on records and clothes. Maybe the clothes weren't as stylish as in previous decades, but it wasn't all tie-dye and bell-bottoms, and not everyone was a hippy. I started the decade...

    "D-Day" by Stephen E. Ambrose

Yes, a very good book. And sorry to be pedantic, but they were glider-borne rather than Para-troops. The glider pilots did a fantastic job with only one of the six gliders in the raiding party going missing. The others landed within 50 yards of the two bridges.
