You may already be aware of this, but just wanted to warn you...from my experience of stacking hats together, the grosgrain ribbon often gets crimped and ruined a little. I've had good luck steaming it back to shape, but there's always a risk of it not flattening back out, especially if it's...
Just like ScottF, I started with wool and cheapo straw...then I discovered vintage fur felt off Ebay. ALL I COULD SAY WAS WOW!!! And I can usually pick up a vintage for cheaper than the new wool I had bought! Some people like their stuff to be brand new. I however like the history behind a...
Au contraire,
I'm fully aware of the statement the upturned brim makes in the Golden Era. But I feel that we as a society are so far removed from that image that it doesn't resonate now the way it did then. Besides, I think it looks good!
Here's my budding collection so far. Having them all laid out, I feel ridiculous owning so many hats, and my wife tells me the same! Little does she know, I've got two more vintage on the way(a Resistol 990 and a Cavanagh straw), with probably a couple more Ebay purchases within the week. Then...
I wanted to get folks' opinions on this hat(a Churchill Beaver 50 from Ebay, only $23!!!)...Which do you prefer...brim snapped down, or remaining up? I like both, but just wanted to see what others might think.

I have a hard time with my hat size. I seem to fall somewhere in between a 6 7/8 and a 7. It also depends on the hat maker. I've got an Akubra 55(6 7/8) that fits perfect. But my vintage Resistol, and vintage Churchill Milan straw are both a bit too snug at the same size. Then I have some 7's...
Mayserwegener,
I started with a center dent, which kept going crooked on me, and was still bumpy. I couldn't get a crisp dent with even, rounded curves. And I have a vintage resistol stingy with just the center dent, so I ended up just wanting to experiment a bit. The bumping may also be a...
Chinaski,
Thanks for the link. I was using steam on this, which seemed to help soften the felt and make it more workable. I'll go check out that link today.
Alright, this was my first time working on an open crown. It started as a simple center crease(or dent? I'm still learning the proper terms), but I couldn't get the felt to smooth out, so I kept fooling around with it. This is what I ended up with, and wore it out like this last night, but am...
OHHH!!! Thanks for schooling me on that! It was labelled on Ebay as a bowler, and me not knowing any different, thought as much. But when I put it on, it did seem a little odd to me. Which makes me question what makes a bowler a bowler?
These just arrived today. I'm very happy with them! The first is a Churchill Italian Milan Straw Hat. I don't have much experience with straws, but this is the nicest, tightest, smallest weave I've seen.

Now, here's a Churchill Bowler, Beaver '50'...very nice felt, very soft...
I've been quite excited during the lead-up to their unveiling, but admit I was UNDERwhelmed once I saw the collection. A few nice items, but not overly impressed. Very similar to J Crew, which I'm a fan of, but nothing that sets it apart.
I sent a letter to Orvis, complaining about the fit of...
I can tell you as a one-time owner of a Saddleback Briefcase, they are EXTREMELY durable. Just be aware that they are quite heavy. And listening to all these airline damage stories would make me very nervous to check anything so nice! I've been drooling over their Suitcase for a couple years...
You're gonna be happy with that one! I've got a similar Resistol Beaver with the Kitten Finish, and its definitely the nicest felt in my small collection. Enjoy!
That's a great looking hat, and I really love that bowtie! I've been meaning to get me one for awhile now, and it definitely looks good on you. Can I ask where you got that, and if you recommend any brands?
