"Thirty Things that Need to Stage a Comeback"

I'd switch the order, if it is an order, to 1, 4, 2, 3. Why put respect down below ritual? About who should be hauling our machine guns around, the question today is far more psychological than physical. One lesson of WW2 we don't often talk about is that an effective soldier has to have not...

"Thirty Things that Need to Stage a Comeback"

That's a new one on me. Does it bear explaining in a public forum?

    Llewellyn Chilson: America’s Neglected Warrior

Despite the object of the piece, it finally showed loyalty to the chain of command by not trying to examine the War Department's reasoning. Makes it difficult to really discuss the matter.

The Dumbing Down of America - Here's Why

If I knew, I'd be marketing to them. You would too, I imagine.

The Dumbing Down of America - Here's Why

It'd have to be beyond Salon into parlor pink territory. Parlor pink yet futurist. Witness PM's coverage of television as if it mattered, long before it actually did. I'm still trying to figure out who Ralph Ingersoll thought PM's audience was, besides Ralph Ingersoll.

    What are you listening to?

Herb must have thought he could get away with interesting arrangements as long as they weren't played with too much beat.

I think that ad is actually for the Chermot Ballroom in Omaha, surely a one-night gig for both bands.

    Best M-422(a) repro?

I also own the G&B 422A. It's not a faithful contract replica, and the goatskin is chrome-tanned, but it's very solid and comfortable. Do make certain of your size, tho; they run big.

    Best M-422(a) repro?

    One of 2 pre-A repros is Good Wear's Monarch M-422. In a lower bracket there's Bill Kelso'sWillis & Geiger M-422.

    What are you listening to?

Herbie Kay and his band out of Chicago, who signed on with the same guitar vamp on every number, play a take on Swing, Mr. Charlie that would have pleased even the most conservative midwest dancers in 1936. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0yhihVPIbP4 Back to 1931 and Cole Porter's Love for...

    Clean Jokes

In the US, this joke belongs to our Marines, who consider it - along with the Corps itself - proof of the existence of God.

Terminology: US vs. UK - 1942

What's the Brit for "going to be married"? And now that we're off the 40s and off clothing: Are there leavings after a leaving party? Or do they all get eaten? lol

    Cockpit USA ANJ-4

Yes. But ex-military people are trained to respond to that attitude. And they're a big part of the customer base.

    Clean Jokes

An old Northwest legend, dating at least to the 1920s, has to do with the metal bands used by the Washington Biological Survey to tag migratory birds. The bands bore a Seattle address and the abbreviation "Wash. Biol. Surv." until the agency received the following letter from an address in...

Terminology: US vs. UK - 1942

OK, cool. There was definitely some confusion over on this side during the 30s, when the style first arrived here.

In what era were vest popular for men?

We're all agreed it's pronounced weskit, right? Sometimes even spelled that way in vernacular writing. A waste coat is what happens when you put on too much paint.

Terminology: US vs. UK - 1942

Cuffs on trousers were turn-ups - always hyphenated, to avoid confusion with the popular vegetable. A drape suit was a lounge suit. Canvas sneakers such as Keds were plimsolls. A turtleneck was a roll-neck. This has since changed meaning to mean a low turtleneck that does not fully fold. A...

    The Vintage Tailoring Thread

Remember the old double standard...making women's clothes was a home craft, but making men's was an industry! In comparison to dresses, suits have to fit like gloves and wear like iron.
