Some people invest in the felt, some people pay for a name. If you ask me...and I realize that no one has asked me...anyone who would pay $600 for a Borsalino really should take a closer look at the work being produced today by some of our several very talented hat makers here in the U.S.

Gary White sometimes has mink felt. It is superb...unbelievable, really. It is also quite dear, in the $600 range if I remember correctly, but worth every penny to anyone who knows his felt. Pictures, especially pictures on a computer screen cannot express the feel and color of these hats...
I have my felt hats made by and maintained by Gary White in Buffalo. He has a web site. but the only way to really reach him is by telephone or to walk into his shop.
Gary's telephone number is (716) 896-3722. His address is 1318 Broadway Street, Buffalo, NY 14212-1705.
He is not...
By the way, Alterego, here in the North we give a guest more than two choices on where to put his or her hat. It's kind of a tradition. None of those choices is on the bed. Our house was built in 1752, but somehow we find non-bed space for all guests' hats.

If your hat is your biggest concern as you travel you are fortunate. You should also consider your priorities. There are many wonderful places to visit on this earth. If one decides to go or not to go based on the security of his hat, he should think long and hard about what is important to...

I do appologize, indeed. I mistook your initial post that it was a Homburg to be an authortitaive statement. My mistake, but it sure sounded definitive.

I found that I lost more stuff...including hats...while going through overland border checkpoints in West Africa and the Balkans, and at various Eastern European customs stations. I generally considered this to be a small part of the reasonable and customary cost of getting to my destination...
Now that's a good question...I am sure it has been addressed often on this list, but permit me to recapitulate...
Fedora comes from the 1882 French play by Victorien Sardou, titled Fédora, in which the title character was a woman who wore a hat supposedly much like the fedoras we wear today...
I appreciate your kind comments and the acknowledgment of others here. Thank you!
Traversing Africa overland continues to be one of the greatest adventures in the world and I wish everyone had the opportunity to try it. I never had so much fun nor reaped such enormous personal rewards until I...
