I've have one Leica I've used since 1967. They last forever. If you look on the dreaded auction site you can find a good user M-6 for under eight hundred bucks. Lenses, of course, are extra. Good luck!

I do appologize for my inability to post pictures. As some of you may surmise from my avatar and screen name, I still store all of my photographs on 24 X 36mm acetate chips. I guess it makes sense for me to do business with Gary, a guy who makes hats by hand and has yet to discover e-mail.

Gary has been making and maintaining my felt hats for years...more than a decade...I would not entrust them to anyone else. I don't know from where he procures his mink-slash-beaver blocks, but they are the best hats I have ever encountered, new or vintage, and I own four. He is not cheap and...
I have a bunch of M series Leicas, but they are tools of the trade, not really a collection. Not that there's anything wrong with an M9, mind you, but the newest Leicas I do or will own are M6 Classics (.72 & .85); I still store all of my pictures on 36mm X 24mm acetate chips.

DICTIONARIES AND OTHER ENGLISH LANGUAGE REFERENCE WORKS
I own twenty-six copies alone of the Merriam Webster New International Dictionary; Second Edition (1934-1961), it is the greatest English language dictionary ever compiled and I am gathering all variants, including the exquisitely rare...
A good professional hatmaker who knows what he or she is doing. I use Gary White in Buffalo, but there are several others who have their followings on this list.

Bookster makes many garments...caps included...out of a choice of more than 100 tweeds. I have suits, jackets, trousers and a couple of caps and have never been disappointed. Ordering, payment and delivery could not be easier.
The caps...
Unfortunately, I still store all of my pictures on 24mm X 36mm chips of acetate (reference my avatar). In any case a picture won't tell you how fine a piece of felt a hat is.
I have several hats that Gary has made or refurbished and the quality is first rate, even for the hats he made for me...
Fold back the leather and look just under the edge of the lining. Herbert Johnson used to attach a slip to the lining which told the year of manufacture. I do not know if they did this for hats re-branded for Brooks, but it was true of all of their London hats...at least up to 1982. Something...
Bogart...Not Indy
I've worn fedoras since before there was an Indiana Jones and my friends, family and acquaintances are all used to seeing me in a hat. In fact, many people do not realize I am bald because they have only seen me in a hat, especially at shul.
That said, while I do not get...
I must demur. I find that the venerable old hat makers of London, Herbert Johnson and Lock included, have since the mid eighties produced truly inferior quality hats that they sell at astonishing prices. It is fun to look around at Lock and at the HJ corner of Swaine Adeney, but I wouldn't buy...
I loved the old Herbert Johnson Grosvenors. I still own four, each lovely and all purchased prior to 1985, which is about when it seems that Herbert Johnson went down the loo.

My son has taken possession of a mid-grey mink-felt custom made for me by Gary White!!! Well, at least he has good taste in hats. I just couldn't say, "No," and he looks great under it. To avoid true intergenerational warfare, I bought him his own Pisson shave brush at the first sign of...
My choice would be Montecristi Hat Works in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

If you have never been to Santa Fe, it is one of the loveliest destinations in America and you can also go home with a wonderful hat...at least having ordered a wonderful hat! Finish your...
If you can procure a picture of the bereaved hat and send it to Milton with some estimated dimensions, he will reproduce exactly the hat you want. Other hatmakers noted on this list can provide the same servcice...we each have our favorite and so might you. ;)
Mind you, this may not be...
I have my Panamas custom finished by Milton Johnson at Montecristi in Santa Fe and I always get exactly what I want. Milton always seems to hae a phenomenal selection of blocks from which to choose in a very broad price range.

Its kind of like Potter Stewart's observation from Jacobellis v. Ohio, "I know it when I see it." I think the same logic obtains to trilbies and pornography.
