Though that soldier is not wearing them I was always interested in their footwear. They had some boots called "Tabis" I believe they were split toed. I never understood puttees what did they do exactly ? Are they like 80's leg warmers ? They seem to much of a hassle to put on.
All the V-Mails and letters from that period had BEAUTIFUL handwriting. It is a lost art no doubt. I remember watching a "Our Gang" episode where they were practicing writing. "Chubby" would dip his pen in ink write then blot. Those days are pretty much gone along with the typewriter (remember...
I agree Cokes and some candy bars taste different in Europe. I think they use a different type of sugar. My relatives who live there say likewise. On the subject of Hershey Bars. I remember back in the early 90s Hersheys brought back the Tropical Chocolate bar. This was in response to the 1st...
I never thought a thread dedicated to the M-65 would show up this site. Then again I own many variations of the Brit DPM. I guess it makes sense an Aussie or a Brit would want an M-65. Every guy I knew in the 70s had them. I should buy another original issue before they go by way of the Gooney Bird.
Like some loungers I like a nice Cigar to relax. My Dr. says " Can't you just relax with some Lemonade ? " Sorry not the same. I was suprised the last time
I was at the Airport to see enclosed Smoking rooms. It kind of reminded of those TB rooms they had last century. I think Women on cell...
Wow all those Paratroopers ! I remember being 1 of the 5 that would show up at a battle. Then being a 82nd guy ! Now it seems everybody and their brother is a 101st 506 guy. Things sure have changed .............
There was a real fear of Gas in WWII. Airborne Jumpsuits were saturated with a chemical agent. It caused the suit to be un-breathable and smelly. They were usually rid of when a chance arose. Some say that is why D-Day uniforms are rare. Gas masks were the first things dumped and the carriers...
Rod Serling was in the 11th ABN. He started writing when he was recovering wounds he received in the Pacific. Wonder why he did some of his episodes about the Pacific ? Last time I saw "Trapper John" he was on FOX News as a commentator.
They're called "Hump Jobs" check out Mark Bando's 101st site (Triggertime).Sometimes ATF or WPG sells buttons, fabric and other uniform parts. Great idea on the sewing kits now to find them.
I know he moved his operation months back. Maybe he's not up to speed. I know Juan personally and I know he wouldn't hose you. Last time he had problems were because he had Movie Contract obligations. Maybe there's a new movie in the works. I feel your pain as I'm dealing with Sportsman Guide...
Polaroid ?! 35mm is pretty much done too. I remember that Aluminum sleeve you had to put the polaroid photo in. You stuck it in your armpit to develop it.
I believe they film this series at Chino Airport in Ca. My friends father offered some technical advise (not professionally) as he was a Ball Gunner. I tried watching this series recently and couldn't do it. Sometimes it sucks being a WWII buff.
Or if you were a P-38 Pilot in the 13th AF you wore nothing (skin). I talked to a Pilot who said he couldn't wait to get to altitude where it was cooler. It was hard enough putting on a salted sweat crusted helmet let alone a shirt.
I was just looking at some yesterday www.ima.com (International Military Antiques) has them AND the WWII Plastic Razors ! I contemplated buying them myself. I can still see old Pop shaving his face with one. Unissued and still in pristine conditon get them 'for they're gone.
