I picked up a gold and black Waterman Hemisphere (my first fountain / non-disposable pen) in Cambridge in May. I've used no pencil and no other pen since that day. I dropped it once, it has a small scuff from that (which irks me beyond belief), but beyond that works excellently.

I'd say that's rather true. The teachers I have who seem to take a true interest in what they're doing tend to have a a few pairs of good shoes. The ones who are there for the paycheck wear sneakers as much as possible (including with trousers...ew) and, if not, cheap loafers.
That really is a great hat on you. The brim compliments your features excellently, and the color of the felt and ribbon work great with your skin tone.
I've noticed a trend. Good hats can be worn with a flannel or with a suit and there's no out of place look. This is one of those hats.
On an aside, but still related.
I think that your hair and your shoes are VITAL to your formal look. Recalling my friends' outfits worn to Homecoming....atrocious is not a rude enough word.

Take a tailor's cloth-tape measure, or any soft tape measure (don't use the one's in your garage), and a friend. Have them wrap it around your head about an inch above your eyes and the largest part of the back of your head. Measure to 1/8 of an inch.

I'd just like to back what Feltfan said. The Mediterranean had been a hotbed of revolutionary fervor since the Franco-Prussian war (which lead to the Paris Commune amongst others). Workers in that area had not forgotten those times and the good it did for them.
