    Spit and polish

Ft. Riley must have been around a long time. I expect beaucoup people went through basic or were otherwise posted there. It was the base of the 9th Infantry Division for the window of time I was around. Look for Junction City on the map, somewhere in the outback of Kansas.

    Spit and polish

I was enjoying the spit shinning conversations so much I almost forgot...US Army, conscripted by Mr. LBJ, spent most of a year at Ft. Riley, then most of the second year in the Vietnam extravaganza. Shoe shinning was big deal at Ft. Riley but the skill seemed underappreciated in the area around...

We'll be sure to take a look at the new section of the Lake James Park, thanks. I hope you don't give up kayaking. Even at 63, I still enjoy a lazy paddle on flat water. I like getting out on the lakes when the water is low. A few years back we made it to Badin and Falls Lake (Yadkin/Peedee)...

Gees Femme, I've talked with a lot of folk in Pinehurst over the years but never knew that anyone was actually from Pinehurst. Wonderful. Even though I'm from Charlotte, which probably had 100,000 people when I was a kid, nowadays when you meet somebody here the first thing they say is "how...

It would be great to meet you and the Mayflower. Sorry about the glitch with the starter. Later this year we'll be taking our Kayaks to Lake James a time or two so we can see the lake down 15 feet. On one of those trips I'll send you a PM, a few days in advance, to see if you are about and...

Sorry Mr. Big, somehow I'm just now noticing this thread you started long ago. I live in Mooresville now but was in Charlotte from day one until about 20 years ago. My family has lived in Mecklenburg County for about 200 years. We visit my wife's family in Waynesville several times a year and I...

    Any Leaf-Peepers Out There?

NC Mountains We are in the NC mountains this weekend, on a mountain which looks down on Waynesville, Clyde, Lake Junaluska, etc., at about 4500'. The most color we see from here is looking toward Mt. Pisgah and Cold Mountain. The colors are wonderful but the cool air is glorious. After months...

    What are you wearing today??

Looking good MM. Sunday afternoon we stopped by Jack 'o the Wood for a pint or two of Green Man, on our way back to the flat(bad)lands, and I wondered how you might be doing these days. After walking around with the hoards of folks who made it to the Apple Festival in Waynesville we decided to...

Optimo was listed as PERFECT, what's this?

Perfect; Good for it's age Zet, I can understand why you say "Good for it's age" means nothing. I have, over the years, come to think of "Good for it's age" to translate to "rode hard and put up wet", if you are lucky. If not then it's closer to dragged through a keyhole...backwards. Minty...

    Walking Sticks & Canes.

Bingo, Mr. Warbaby This is exactly what I do. My limp is not all that dramatic but it's still noticable. I'm actually quite comfortable in that character and apparently believeable. I suppose it does help to be an old, gray, Vietnam era guy. I have never experienced a problem with either a...

    Barbour Bedale

Sorry, it is too large Thank you for taking time to provide the measurements. I'm sorry to find that it is much too large for me. I think even a US size 46 would be a little large. I am sorry to miss such a nice jacket.

    Barbour Bedale

An attractive price I'd love to have this but I think it'll be way too big. Most Orvis things I have are a 44 but I do have a 46 or two, which are borderline big. Would you guess the Barbour runs a bit large like many Orvis items or could you please say what the approximate chest measurement is?

Somewhere In Heaven, There’s An Old Hanger….

Very nice tribute, Mr. Finch Although a number of years have passed now, I still know what it is like for a man to lose his father.

    Hurricane Earl

I was happy to hear the good news, Mr. Finch. I was happy to hear the news that Earl took a favorable right turn. The night before on the TV there was "Hurricane" Jim Cantore in Buxton or Hatteras or both. I feared the worse. That guy has a knack for showing up in the impact zone.

    Boater faction!

End of the hurricane season. Where I live in North Carolina and especially around the NC/SC coast, it's the end of the hurricane season before we drydock the seersuckers and boaters (The two of us who wear boaters). This, of course does not include the big-city uptown bankers.

Nice piece of work, Mr. Bowers. Perhaps I should pick up a beater boater and give it a go to build some skil. Thanks for taking time to show us what you did. I'll keep looking in case you do post a photo.

Can you tell us more about the sweatband? Mr Bowers, Please tell us more about how you did the replacement sweatband or perhaps you have done so already but elsewhere? That is a nice piece of work. I have passed up more than one nice boater because of a loose sweatband. No shop, I am aware...
