Just ordered a Kentucky Smith Safari Edition panama from Brent Black. Order is still processing, but from what I hear, it should take about a month to arrive. No rush (summer is not going anywhere...). Still, hope the hat arrives by Straw Hat Day.
Maybe you missed buying a hat on last season's go-around, or maybe you find yourself between hat seasons. Or maybe you're waiting for that custom hat to become available again.
For me, I currently have two hats on my wishlist. The first is unclear to resurface again. The hat is the JJ Hat...
My Classic Boater from Lock & Co. Hatters arrived today. This is the most "vintage" style boater hat that I could find sold new. It has a 2 1/2 inch brim, a 3 inch crown, and is made from sisal straw. Here are some pictures:
The straw on this hat is extremely thick, which adds a considerable...
After searching in vain for a "vintage" style boater hat, I found the only one available new: the Lock & Co. Classic Boater. Put it on order today. Coming over from the great UK.
Wore my Carbon Grey Akubra Stylemaster in a blizzard today. Hung it up to dry. It's in perfect condition now.
The bandwork was done by me from grosgrain ribbon (I've gotten much better at it by now).
Just wanted to post an update on my hatband modifications. I recently ordered some 1 1/2 inch grosgrain ribbon from Amazon to create some interchangeable hatbands. Here are the results:
Akubra Stylemaster Carbon Grey (White Ribbon, Single Bow):
Akubra Stylemaster Federation Navy (Silver...
Thanks for the tips on swirling. I actually have more of a problem with creases in the hatbands. The Panama Hats Direct bands arrived folded, so I have to steam the creases out after applying the hatband.
In this thread, I will be posting my year-end hat modifications for basically my entire hat collection. If this thread needs to be moved, please do so. Armed with a glue gun, double-sided tape, hatbands from Panama Hats Direct, and a pocketknife, I have added new hatbands to most of my hats...
I'm currently waiting for a Stetson Stratoliner Special Edition in True Blue from Delmonico Hatter. Package is currently delayed by USPS (In Transit, Arriving Late w/ No Location). Mail delivery is strange sometimes.
I'm also thinking of posting a thread detailing my year-end hat modifications...
Does anyone know where you can buy boater-width (2") grosgrain hat bands with bow in solid colors (preferably brown)? The best I can find is 1 3/8" width. Thanks.
Just purchased an Akubra Federation IV in Tawny Fawn from HatsDirect in a size 59. Apparently my head has shrunk considerably from a 61 in the last 6 months. It only dawned on me one day when I wondered why all my hats fit loose...
Turns out Bon Clique Bon Genre canceled my order due to US customs restrictions on package size. Therefore, I will be purchasing the most uncrushable hat box material: pure plastic.
This is a 19"x15"x7-3/4" storage box for ~$11. I decided on this type of box as an alternative to a hat...
Well, I just went ahead and ordered one $10 hat box from Bon Clique Bon Genre as a test. If it does not have the crown support ring, I actually have one or two hat rings left over from standard shipping boxes that I use as stands. Beyond those, its off to the craft store, I guess.
Actually, that's why I need 7 new boxes. The cardboard boxes that I have are collapsing, and skewing the shape of the brims. Although, I didn't use a plastic bag. Great minds think alike, eh?
I am in the market for cardboard hat boxes with crown inserts, such as the ones shipped by Delmonico and JJ Hat Center. However, the only supplier offers overpriced boxes ($25):

$25 is overpriced for me because I require 7 of them. o_O Also...
I don't have an old photo, and neither is this hat made of felt. However, I was cleaning out the attic the other day, and I came across a costume fedora I wore to a Halloween party when I was ~16. The hat feels as it was made from cardboard.
It fits perfectly.
Here is my take on the Stetson Lassiter that I ordered. The Stetson Lassiter is a wool-felt fedora with a bound 2 1/4 inch brim, and a standard center crease. It's the only True Blue fedora made by Stetson with a standard fedora band. It is unlined, has a ribbon sweatband, and does not ship...
