I have a moderate sized hat collection. Half of my collection are hats that I don't wear anymore, half of my collection are hats that I wear now. Back in early 2020, my hat collection consisted of:
Akubra Stylemasters (Carbon Grey, Loden, Navy)
Akubra Federation IV (Moonstone, Dark Brown, Tawny...
The hat I'm waiting for is my own. I shipped my Midnight Stetson Saxon to JJ Hat Center for a hat band change. The Stetson Saxon originally arrived from JJ Hat Center with a non-standard 1 inch band (the feather is mine):
The Saxon originally comes with a 1-5/8 inch to a 1-3/4 inch band. I...
In the last installment of Strange Occurrences in Hat Buying, I ordered a JJ Hat Center The Ken custom-quality hat. These hats are typically listed at a size 1/2-1cm larger than their actual size. However, my hat was listed three sizes too large, and still one size too big for my head:
I...
I returned The Ken Grey to JJ Hat Center. Personally, I don't know why the hat is considered higher quality. The felt was flimsier than I would have liked, something that I don't think would have lasted. I know people on this forum have rated the quality of modern Stetsons low, but The Ken's...
Fortunately, the hat was only slightly loose. I only needed some thin resizing tape. I have some Akubra Federation IV 61 cm hats that require double thick resizing tape, and much more of it. Compared to those hats, I don't mind this too much.
In the last installment of the strange occurrences at JJ Hat Center, I had ordered a Stetson Saxon Midnight (Navy), which arrived with a non-standard 1" hatband, and missing Stetson pin and feather. I had to add my own feather.
Recently, I ordered a custom-quality fedora from JJ Hat Center...
Found an affordable jacket in the same style as the Loro Piana Traveler Windmate Jacket from The Blacklist. Has a James Spader vibe when paired with a panama. Today's weather is warm, but brisk. Hope my hat doesn't blow off my head.
For me, I am a fan of the contrasting hatband. For dark colored fedoras in particular, this is necessary. I particularly don't care for fedoras that are all black. They seem too gloomy for my taste. Here's a picture of an Akubra Stylemaster Carbon Grey which I modified with a white hatband made...
I will only write the following:
Humanity consists of individuals. Each individual has his/her own free will, and the ability to make decisions. The decision to consider a group of individuals as the same without considering their individuality results in a stereotype. If stereotypes are...
Previously, my Stetson Saxon Midnight (Navy) that I ordered from JJ Hat Center arrived with a non-standard 1" hatband without the Stetson pin or feather. The Saxon usually ships with a 1-3/4" hatband. I had to add my own feather.
I decided that I would replace the hatband. Since 1-3/4"...
My 20-21 WPI Montecristi Fino from Brent Black has arrived. I ordered the Classic Fedora style with a 1-1/16" Havana Brown band. I also opted for a 2-1/2" brim. Everything seems to be perfect.
The blocking job is miles ahead of the condition that my last Montecristi Fino arrived in. The pin...
It's been four weeks since I ordered a Classic Fedora 20-21 WPI Montecristi Fino from Brent Black. Hope to be receiving it soon. My original Montecristi Fino has experienced some discoloration from being stiffened one to many times.
It got me thinking: for all the work Brent has to do to...
From my view, it seems that your hat has a WPI of 19 horizontal by 18 vertical for a WPSI of 342. If anyone sees differently, let me know. Your weave is also wavy horizontally, which means that your WPSI may vary based on measured location. I would say that any WPI above 10 would make a great...
Here's a real hat mystery. I obtained two new Stetson Saxons to add to my 1950's style hat collection. The first was ordered from JJ Hat Center in Midnight (Navy). The second was ordered from DelMonico Hatter in Cordova (Dark Brown). The strange part is that while both of these hats are Stetson...
I'm on JJ Hat Center's mailing list, so I recently received notification regarding the return of Borsalino hats. This one is a Montecristi fino center crease for $1500. One characteristic of JJ Hat Center's listings for straw hats is that they are inconsistent in listing panama hat qualities...
Here's a question for those who were in the market years ago:
Did Brent Black ever ship his panamas with the hat pin as shown in his website image:
Mine did not come with one. It's okay, though. I would probably have to explain what the "BBB" meant to people who ask. Right now, I would...
I've attempted to seek out tan colored panamas over the standard ivory/white panamas recently. There are some that I currently own, and some that I do not. Tan colored panamas are less commonly found, unless you shop JJ Hat Center or Brent Black. Here are some of them:
Kentucky Smith Safari...
I also wear a boater in formal/semi-formal occasions. Most modern boaters out there are "skimmers," with a brim of 2" or less, with a braided weave and a club-striped band. I managed to find one more suited to its vintage counterparts, with a pilated straw weave and a 2 1/2" brim. This is the...
By complete surprise, my Kentucky Smith Safari Edition panama hat from Brent Black arrived today. The order on my Brent Black account still says processing. o_O This is Brent's Cuenca version of the Indiana Jones hat, with the safari-style downturned rear brim.
I guess I should have expected...
