Welp, that's it then. I'll just find another source for a "Mainer" like jacket. I just cannot do it at those prices.
Too bad, I really wanted one of those damn things.
I offer no actual info, but I picked up a hat on the streets of NYC for $5 that is the exact same cloth and pattern. For some reason I want to say it was Turkish, but I cannot be sure.
We tend to forget in debates like these that the laws are designed to be enforced against Walts to go bragging about their service that they never performed. Check out the Army Rumour Service wiki and you'll know what I mean. Us reenactors and vintage folk (heck, anybody that likes cool stuff)...
I picked up a book "Tailoring Suits the Professional Way" dated 1951 and their bit on arms holes involves measuring under the arm against a measurement taken from the middle of the back of the collar.
When I get a chance, I'll scan parts of the book and put it up; it's cool!
No pictures at the moment, but on nearly all my trousers I use Soviet belts and buckles. Nice, big brass plates with the hammer and sickle on them. I also have a Navy one, a OD painted one and a brown Czech buckle as well. My favorite is my East German buckle.
There used to be this German reenactor at events.... he was legendary. In the days before cheap, available German uniforms he had his custom made and the very next event the damn thing was straining on him.
He would go into the field with back packs full of food. He actually went on a tactical...
Hey all, I was at Penney's the other day and happened upon their "American Living" brand. Lots of stuff, all with a vintage flair to it. I have two pairs of Cords, a cutaway collar dress shirt and a really nice tattersall, along with a sweater vest. Has anybody else saw this line?
Heard Lauren...
Hey, Target has a really nice looking vintage style work shirt in a denim with two pockets, white ivory-like buttons on their vintage label Menora for $20. Nice, heavy material. I picked one up, but it's in Ohio and I'm not.
Oh, this picture is a few years old, but the boots have not really changed too much. I pecard them once a year and polish once a month. With a good set of insoles I find that these are really comfortable to wear all day. These are the At the Front Model.
Yeah, nowhere in East Tennessee, unless Knoxville has some hidden gem I was never aware of.
Out here, in South Dakota I see lots and lots of hats... all cowboy style. The most common though are beaten and battered working ones, practical hats that have been through the ringer a few times...
The Salvation Army near me has been a gold mine of.... shoes. $2 a pop, I bought a great pair of JC Penny brown brogans from the '60s or '70s and later found a pair of older Johnston and Murphy Brown oxfords, not the best of shape but they will work very well for me. Not much else. No Goodwill...
Damn good points. Damn good.
When I go to an event dressed at my Grandpa, or Uncle Ralph I do so because otherwise, they'd be forgotten. Sure, Uncle Ralph didn't invade Europe or fly a Mustang, but without him and his citizen ilk we would never have won. I like talking about it. I like...
The guy that runs that above website is either flaky as hell or half ways decent. There seems to be no in between from what I have read from German reenactors that have bought from him.
Personally I would stick to one of the vendors talked about on this forum, including Bad Wolf, because they...
Good post. We are, to put it lightly, "Walts" as in Walter Mittys. It's a British Army phrase from the Army Rumour Service and fits what we do very, very well.
I fully acknowledge the fact I am a Walt. I do like to educate the public as to the war. Showing kids how a squad would undertake a...
