I'm afraid anything with the skyline motif is going to be too far over the top for me. I like the striped designs that have been proposed, and the FL guy would work too if it's simple and conservative.

    Businessman's wardrobe

I'm sure you'll get conflicting answers, but my opinion is that a small, thin watch is more elegant, and therefore more appropriate for a businessman, than a big thick one. Traditionally, leather bands are more formal than metal ones, light faces are more formal than dark ones, and I would...

    Necktie Knots

If you have the means and inclination to acquire an entire rotation of bespoke shirts that all have the same perfectly-suited-to-your-face collar, and if you also have a wardrobe of bespoke ties that are made just to your specifications (length, width, shape, thickness of lining) and always tie...

    A shoe question

No black with blue is a rule that has tried to seep in from women's wear, where it's acceptable to wear blue shoes. Blue shoes are not correct for men's dress clothing (Marc Chevalier's collection notwithstanding), so the rule doesn't apply. Black leather dress shoes, well shined, are the...

Do you wear hats because you're balding?

I'm not balding. I wear hats because they're an integral part of classic style. Protection from skin cancer is the excuse I use when I face a particularly stubborn style ignoramus who has a problem with my hats.

    Dinner Jacket from RL

Closer to a smoking jacket than a dinner jacket, innit?

    Barber Shops

Many cities now have health ordinances that prohibit barbers using straight razors. So instead they use shavettes, a thing that looks like a straight razor but takes disposable single-edge razor blades. I don't know if the quality of the shave is different because of the switch.

    The Silk Knit Tie

Do you have a Brooks Brothers outlet or 346 store near you? I've picked them up there for $10-15 before.

Help me with the novel? Summer suits

Re: Seersucker It depends on the context. From an article on authentically American clothing items by G. Bruce Boyer: Linen and wool would both certainly be correct.

    Mr. Rover's black suit request

This is truly tragic. Every man needs a pocket square, Stan! PM me your address and I'll send you one. (The photo looks good, btw.) :)

    Take my razor...please!

I have the barber shave my neck when he cuts my hair, and it doesn't need shaving more often than that.

    Take my razor...please!

Pshaw...the R&D that has gone into most of today's razors has been, "How can we get the consumer to buy more expensive razors/blades/cartridges, and more of them?"

    What are you wearing today??

Alan, I'm still crying over the fact I didn't manage to snag those shoes. You look splendid.
