Here is something I found prowling downtown with Senator Jack.
Wool with satin lapels.

The label is still on the sleeve.

Nice find.

I've been considering something of this ilk, thinking that it could be a good choice for a Black Tie Optional event. I don't think I would wear it to a strict BT event, though you will see them on occasion.

How so?

I am thinking smoking jackets generally have material cuffs and close with a frog style attachment.
Although I am sure there are jackets that have specs in both styles.

Considering I do not smoke, it will be used for dinner. :)

You're right, this isn't a smoking jacket, it's a dinner jacket.
Usually smoking jackets are not made of this material, many have belted waists as well. But, I'm just a girl, what do I know. I was just looking through some vintage fashion books I've got here, and one of them describes the difference between a dinner and a smoking jacket. Ferauds jacket meets the criteria of a dinner jacket.
It's a great jacket Feraud!! I'm sure you'll look quite handsome in it:D

If you could possible scan and post any relevant information that differentiates the two, I think it would be a valuable piece of reference.

Thanks for the compliment! :)

Although interesting, I find this dinner jacket atrocious for my personal taste. (although, hey, my avatar DOES show me in notch lapels and a red bowtie ;) )

Now if I found that for $5 at my local thrift store...I might buy it...if it were in my size and required minimal tailoring...and I guess the tag IS still on it afterall...

I don't know, it just seems so...arghh...

Is there any way you could post some pics with an ensemble? That may be helpful! :D

After that bit of constructive criticism, I doubt I will take the time to give a lesson in style.

I think that could look really hip. Would mixing plaids be too much, do you think?
best to stick with a solid tie?

I love this jacket. I agree with Senator Jack that Feraud will own it. Feraud looks very comfortable in his clothes. The difference between a man of style and a pretender is that a man of style will wear a jacket, animate it, with a commanding presence. Whatever he wears, the focus will still be on him. ;)

Oh, I hope you chaps don't think I was making fun! No, I simply don't like the jacket myself; it's not something I would wear, nor is it something I would buy - mainly on the basis that I have little that would go with it, and nowhere to take it out. Unfortunately, I don't have many black tie affairs to attend and I'm often harrassed for wearing a simple suit to dinner on a Friday night.

I understand your comments on style, and I, of all people, agree that a confident man can make almost anything look great.

But I'm personally not confident enough to wear that jacket. I've still got some years ahead of me (and a ton of suits to purchase, i.e. satin peak lapels) before I can pull that one off! :D

The lapels are satin. I have a satin bow tie and cummerbund to go with it.
I am not brave enough to mix plaids. :)

I recall, a few years ago, a reputable mens store offering formal pumps with a plaid bow.

Me too.

I think that jacket is just swell.

I think it would also play very well in the semi-dress world we live in today. Many corporate events I attend, I would love to wear my tux, but it would be over the top (namely out dressing the boss). This dinner jacket would be perfect, it says dressy and fun all in one.

Wow, I just said that a piece of clothing 'says' something. Hmmmm.

Excuse me, I must go do something manly now.
