Czech hats... It's still hard to believe that Lock is selling Czech hats. Then Bates must be too, and Herbert Johnson. Does anybody know if the Indy fedora from HJ is also made in the Czech Republic?
Well, that's a very Golden Era-like situation. In an Agatha Christie book set in the thirties I just read, Poirot was complaining that "nowadays everything is made in Czechoslovakia".
Yes, the "Antelope" looks good too. Besides green, it also comes in brown, navy, black and grey. What's velour, anyway? Is it brushed felt? There are many velour hats offered at Lock too.
Bates? Their "Grosvernor" fedora looks OK, similar to the "Chelsea" from Lock.

How is the quality of their hats?
I am positively shocked! I thought that the back room of the shop was full of old hat blocks where they block the felt. Are you sure they don't buy the felt elsewhere and block it on the premises? I know they sell Borsalino hats too, but who's Tonak?
I'm concerned so much about the price...
I read an interesting story in an old issue of "Cigar Aficionado" about Gregorio Fuentes, the Cuban who inspired Hemingway to write "The Old Man and the Sea". Here's the article:

Could anyone comment on the quality of Lock's hats? There's only one model that has the right look, in my opinion, and that's the "Chelsea". Has anyone examined these hats from up close? Are they worth the 160 pounds that they're asking...
That's how rayon used to be made, from cellulose. I believe, if I'm not mistaken, that it is now made of plastic, although it has kept the name "rayon".
The fun thing with the models from king and country, is that they're already built and painted. They look just like in the pictures, out of the box. They're made of some molded resin.
