Rayon/Cotton 50/50 is what I look for. What quantity, color and width (lignes or 1/16th inches) are you looking for? I have some narrow and wide circa 1951 ribbon, in black, brown, silver (nice) and dark green khaki (I bought from it from the hatter's son, and away I run). A PM is probably in...
You are so right. This particular flap is probably just the result of the story telling style rather than any sort of overreaction.
One must take care to prepare one's audience. Some tips gleaned from the experts.
1. The lead in is important. Maybe next time start out with something like...
Can't see much in the two viewable photos on my end, but I can see enough to surmise that the usually decorative "sizing" band on the sweat looks functional rather than merely decorative, which says "really old" to me.

"Dames!" Seriously though, that's funny. A little boy at my son's school asked yesterday if I was a detective when I dropped him off wearing a suit, tie & Vagabond King.

A new eBay purchase; a Knox Premier Westlite. These auction photos are not impressive, but these are great hats - very light weight Stratoliner/Open Road clones. I now own three, but still can't wait for this one to arrive.

This was commonly used in the old Archie comics (of the 1930's, I think). I used up read them on the stairs of my great grandparent's home. They had sat in a stack there since their own kids were young.

Rotated & reoriented. Frankly, the lettering looked like "JM" to me, so you did much better than I would have done based on the font. I guess it's a good thing you were that close - a search for JM may not have yielded results leading to the proper name...

Thanks Ole, I found this article a while back when I was researching a belgian belly Stetson Nutria Quality cowboy hat - my very first nutria hat, incidentally, and still my favorite.

"Belgian belly" is reportedly a color that is named after the belly of a Belgian hare.

Ole, I have a great Lundstrom hat and have done some research on the SF company that I've never posted here. Can you post your flange in the hatter's tools thread?

I looked this up, and note that this was actually J.B. Mast Co. per several sources including the American Hatter. I don't know if "J.R." was a typo or an illegible letter on your ruler, and want to help you and others find information on this old school hat supply company that apparently dates...
It's still huge! Although average head sizes have gotten bigger (anecdotally - I'm confident but have no studies), I doubt if there has been much movement at the extremes. Also, size 8 is ostensibly - depending on which hat ruler you use - the same size now as then ;-)

Check out the thread on Naptha (camp fuel) baths. This can be done on a 5 gallon bucket pretty easily. Beware, the stuff is pretty caustic, and will eat a plastic liner if you leave it in the bath too long.
(Edit - Sorry - didn't mean to repeat - had only scanned prior responses & didn't see...
