"A Gentleman Does Not Wear a Straw Hat in the Metropolis, sir"

A great analysis. concise, thoughtful, and well written. In short, a real pleasure to read. I'm guessing author, Lit major, or Lit student? "Faint hat never won fair lady."

    ribbon cleaning?

Try JW hats. JW will sell as many or as few as you want, and they are pretty good. Goatskin, I think. The price is good too, $5.00 if I remember correctly. "Faint hat never won fair lady."

Great work. I've had several vintage liners fade with careful hand washing, even with mild soaps and awareness of the issue. Any suggested products? "Faint hat never won fair lady."

Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

As for the Royal Stetson Deluxe, thanks everyone. It does indicate American Manufacture (not that it would bother me a bit if it didn't, given the quality of the hat). I'm glad I took the chance on this one. Does anyone have any idea of the model? It is Whippet-esque, and also shares some...

Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

I researched this issue and although I am not 100%, my recollection was that the maple leaf was introduced in 1954 to commemorate Canadian manufacture as The Dane suggested. "Faint hat never won fair lady."

pls advise: Home made campaign hat / Montana crease

Hmm. I have neither a snappy response, nor sufficient experience with wool hats (as opposed to fur felts) to challenge your assertion. I assume that you are correct that the hat will shrink if wet/steamed. I'd probably still proceed as indicated if it were me though, because wool fibers are...

pls advise: Home made campaign hat / Montana crease

I would imagine the crown of a typical fedora is rather short for such a project. I would try a cowboy hat from a thrift shop, which will give you more to work with. The creasing instructions given above are in line with what I would do, except that I wet _and_ steam. The water softens the...

    Western, anyone?

Recreased my Bandera 25 in my trademark "Shasta Peaks" crease & added a hatband made from a bridle I purchased for a few bucks at a horse rescue thrift shop. I rarely wore it the other way. The high crown looks good like this, I think. Maybe this one should be called Vermont, or "Green...

Justin, you are a real gentleman and a patriot. Young men and women like you give me great hope for the future of this great nation. Thank you for your service, your constant courtesy, and your friendship. I hope to see you here again when you have time for such trivialities. "Faint hat...

    The Conversion Corral

Dying in process: New sweat from JW hats. Thanks again to The Dane, The Hatted Professor & the other fellas who explained how to properly reed the hat. I get it now. No pics of the brim ironing or foot shaping, but the JW hats YouTube video helped there, and the hat irons I picked up &...

    Hat Psychology

Notwithstanding the portrayal of fedora wearing "bad guys" in gangster movies, I believe that there is still a collective consciousness of well-behaved hatted men going back a very long time. Grandmotherly ladies on the street often tell me "my father used to wear a hat like that," and smile...

Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

I'm in a pleasant state of shock. Just received an unreeded Royal Stetson Deluxe Vita Felt in dark chocolate brown. Paid about $48 shipped. It is marked 6 7/8 but is only a little tight on my 7 1/8 head. Very wearable. The felt is truly amazing & to me at least, the hat is gorgeous in all...
