Hmmm, my wife certainly knows me lol. This morning she has her first play with pyrography on a bit of wood and then say's pass me a bit of that sweat leather, I've got an idea and I want to see how leather burns ..... Early days, but I was thinking about making my own blocks and then hat/s and have her custom the leather with artwork and do the ribbons for me. Much better IMO than those hat jacks for maintaining a hat/sweatbands size. I hate how they twist 'n flop turn when fitting them, handy for adjusting a hat but with my bad hands takes me 3 minutes fiddling with the dang thing when I just want to set a hat and it stay. prolly not a real world...- Silver-Wolf

Not alot of skill needed really but some tools and a chunk of timber is obviously needed, well a hat jack is cheaper than buying wood and tools and can be left in a hat as a keeper also if not worn often. If your close enough in sizes it may work for your other half's hats also. They normally...- Silver-Wolf

Edit: red marks, ya way too tight. They can shrink down as much as 2 'n a bit in sizes, be careful if it's too tight stretching it out. I'm not a fan of doing big stretches as it requires more work and equipment ideally. If you have a chunk of thick wood say 2inches/50mm or so you can easily...- Silver-Wolf

Akubra Overload
There is a difference between the Akubra Heritage and Imperial grades, Heritage is thicker/more dense softer in general but that can vary depending on batch differences with the shellac's. But as I said it comes with enough felt in that bag to make a hat....Or if your crazy enough and had a few drinks it already is a hat..lol Even comes pre-shaped with a center crease, not sure how the wind cords work around my ears...seems a little loose- Silver-Wolf

I used to be able to get it from just such people and places but your no longer allowed to collect fallen or felled trees around where I am and the arborist's who do fell tree's for a living ask for money for wood from the tree's they fell or they chip it all. Thanks for kind remarks. scrounging is best way, you can buy figured timber but man it costs a fortune. A simple chunk of birdseye elm here big enough to make a large bowl would cost $300 or more. lol, as to the hat stand well the top is 4 inches, the base 6 inches and the height is 11 inches- Silver-Wolf

Sure have, many times in the past. Akubra's are renowned for a little bit of shrink over long periods of not being worn, but sounds like you don't need much stretching so it should be fine. A hat jack will serve you well, or a hat stool. Just make sure the leather sweatband is nourished and...- Silver-Wolf

Thank you, I'm quite happy with it myself. Shame I couldn't save more of this beautiful timber, beetles 'n borers had a feast of it. New hat and new display stand/hat rest. Finally finished turning the hat rest/stand, simple enough job when your an able bodied person - but all good fun regardless. The 2 FED's I got have both been really easy, light water spray/spritz and then a bit of steam and just shape them. Yeah, it's certainly normal for Akubra's to be stiff, most of them get a shellac bath twice as well as a water repellent. I suspect half the reason may be my new steamer also...- Silver-Wolf
