To quote that dodgy horse off of Ren and Stimpy, no sir I don't like it.
A good overcoat/greatcoat can (and should) have a flattering silhouette and not look like an old blanket with buttons sewn on. This unfortunately has all the drape and panache of a bin liner.
And a bin liner is a darn...
That original photo is Mark "Hilly" Brown of 1 Sqn in France in early 1940 with the AASF and is an excellent picture of a fairly newish Irvin. As you mentioned the curl in the fleece develops with use. Hilly's also shows how the jacket was initially intended to be worn by regulations, over shirt...
Well done Paul and it looks great on you. Unfortunately you've probably started on a fearsome addiction, namely the search for the perfect Irvin!
Welcome btw,
Tim
Sounds much the same as REG's accounts of the casting for Withnail and I in his film diaries"With Nails", Bruce, or Bruskie as he referred to him at one point, seemed to be on the sauce most of the time!
"With Nails" is fantastic btw, well worth reading.
Not sure if you're my size but I am selling mine (see the first pages) as I have beefed up a bit over the last year and mine doesn't fit in the shoulders.
It has since had a Perry label added and I'm going to throw in an USAAF rubber stamp for the winged stencil which goes under the label -...
I must admit that I'm the same Doctor Damage, I prefer the look of the website version.
Well I have been furnished with a chart requiring a multitude of measurements, and I also need to provide a full length photo of yours truly so we're getting there, but it is reassuring that Andrea needs so...
As I said I don't think I'm fussed. I love the film but I'm not looking to do a Withnail impersonation and therefore 100% screen accuracy actually doesn't bother me. I will see though what Andrea says as I will ask about the pocket, pattern and seams.
But personally, I like the style of the...
A big eye-opener I've had was having good quality tequila (or mezcal for that matter). I'd grown up only having had the rough as guts stuff until a yank mate (living in Oz) introduced me to the "good stuff" that he'd brought back on a trip back home.
It was so good all you wanted to do with it...
Looks great, Brettafett here has one as well doesn't he, and Matt Deckard as well if I'm not mistaken. Be nice to hear some follow ups from them as well.
How are the knits?
Certainly looks to be slightly different. I'll ask Andrea about it and see what she says.
Saying that though, IMHO I think it's one of the most magnificent looking coats I've seen so I'm not sure I'm disappointed if it is not 100% screen accurate.
Well I've succumbed, emailed Ms Galer re sizing. I can't possibly bring myself to go bespoke with Xmas coming up, but sent a couple of measurements and asked what's best for "off the rack" sizings. We shall see.
Just don't tell my wife the price...
Traditionally it was normal for officers to source their uniforms (including greatcoats, formal mess dress, and other specialised items) from a number of tailors who specialised in providing uniforms to the various branches of the military. This grew out originally from the fact that officers...
I lived in one in the late 80s as well. Bought it at an army surplus shop and it was a British Police one with Lancashire Constabulary buttons on it. Was actually fairly nice and very warm. I have no idea what happened to it, probably got chucked out by my parents when I moved out. A lot of...
An ANJ-4 doesn't seem like a silly idea in northern Europe right now at all Sloan.
Although we're a little bit north we've already got a foot and a half of snow here and -4 Celsius. I've been living in my Irvin but if this keeps up and the temps keep going south I'll have to break out the...
One of my very, very favourite films - in my top 5 easily, and one of the few films I still roar with laughter after seeing umpteen times since I first saw it in 1988.
I had no idea someone was making a repro of Withnail's iconic overcoat and I am seriously tempted, even with the 760 quid price...
Well done Andrew, great job!
That has to be one of the most striking contrasts with seam tapes and hide I've seen.
I daresay that's a keeper after all the work you've put in!
As Charles pointed out earlier sheepskin is not horsehide or steerhide but ELC's is certainly robust enough.
I am very hard on all my jackets, I never baby them, not even the Irvin. I've worn it whilst it was snowing and in a couple of torrential downpours without any trouble. I've worn it...
I've only handled 4 original Irvin jackets in my time but my opinion is my ELC Irvin (admittedly an older 2007 version) is virtually indistinguishable in terms of heft, feel, weight and how it has worn from an original. Most people seem to focus only on the fleece and whilst mine has developed...
