Thanks, but it's still gotta be sewn down. I may just do it by hand, but will need a perfect matching thread. Will let you know ;-)

The leather is very soft, but durable. I think it is goatskin. If you watch the YouTube video, you can watch him make them. I like that they are made with a bit of a curl as shown, and I didn't have to buy a gross. Also, if you have a die made (he has an artist) he'll emboss them with your...
Terry,
I'm glad you like the ROTLA hat and will have something other than OR's to wear (although that's really not so bad, is it? ;-). I want to see a head shot of the Westlite when it arrives. I think you're going to like it a lot too.

TJ, MOK & TD,
Thanks for the kind words. I learned a lot on this build, and look forward to doing more when I finish the binding on my Nutria conversion.

Hatter4,

I think they were $5 each. He makes them himself, and they've got a bit of a curve built in. They come in brown & black, with the reed, and for my order at least, the ferrules & sweatband bows were free. They are pretty good...
Cross posting photos of my nearly finished Stetson Nutria conversion. This was a really stained & beat up cowboy hat once.
And also the ROTLA hat I sent Terry today.

Well, I'm going to borrow my mother's old treadle this weekend. I'm pretty decent with a needle & thread, but I'm no great talent yet.
I'm very pleased with this Stetson Nutria conversion. Can't wait to finish it. It was a really beat up old cowboy hat. I'll look for a before photo...

I have used the shower, but usually use a spray bottle because it gives me more control over how damp I get the felt, and I find that it is most moldable when it is not too wet. I use steam also. The heat causes the fur fibers to curl and...
I have seen vintage examples - French made, I believe, and was thinking about duplicating one of my vintage blocks in this material. I'll let you know how it turns out. My main concern is not damaging the block with the starch glue. I'm thinking about heat shrinking plastic wrap to the block...
