SO CUTE!!!! I just love it! The style suits you so well! Those darn vintage belt kits are a blessing and a curse in one. Sometimes modern fabric stores carry them, too. Regardless, it looks great to me, and I just love your fabric!
Amy Jeanne, I think this might be one of my favorite...
Cricket, I pretty much ditto what everyone else says.
You might be better off actually getting your estate sale scissors sharpened than buying new ones, especially if they're a good brand like Wiss (or Weiss?) or Ginger- new shears can be awfully expensive but are a good investment, and it is...
Oh, that's bizarre. It sounds like a design flaw. What you can do is check on your pattern- check the front of the sleeve (the part you'll attach to the front bodice) with the front armhole (of the bodice) from the underarm edge to the notch and see if they're the same length. They should be...
Here's an excerpt from How to Dress Well, by Margaret Story, from 1924. Although it's probably a bit early for the periods you might be wondering at, a lot of the fundamentals carried over.
It's a pdf file.
Morning Dress
And here's a short excert from Harmony in Dress from 1933 on home dress...
I actually have an almost identical pattern and it's called a "Morning Dress". It's pretty much what you'd wear tidying up and getting ready in the morning before company would come over, though I think it's quite cute enough to wear outdoors now-a-days.
I admit I don't use them that often as I prefer draping, but I remember making them from the form in fashion school. There are specific patterns I've used that are a great fit, or I know what to tweak on them to make them fit well, so it's easy to modify the pattern. Maybe you have a strapless...
MarieAnne, what a bummer! I hate when things like that happen! It looks super cute, though.
A lot of time one fabric will have more "wiggle" than the other- I found that certain fabrics tend to "grow" the more you handle them, or even while cutting, and when you do curves most any fabrics do...
I did! But it was so long ago that I don't remember much construction... I used a black rayon crepe and it was a nightmare getting to to lay right, and then my iron was too hot and the seams all became visible on the outside! It was one of those projects I finished, wore once, then donated to...
Sure thing!
Hey! I made those :) Yup, either of those would work. Something with a nice drape works well. You might even want to get something with a bit of rayon in it if you like. Of course, I have had good and bad luck with buying fabric online... sometimes it's hard to figure what it...
I can see how this could be confusing! I think what they're trying to say is to baste the ruffle first, then baste the basted ruffle to the dress. So you'll have a gathered ruffle, then attach it. I'm guessing they are having you baste it on because you have a facing piece you will attach...
That skirt looks perfect! I'd just taper it in a bit at the bottom, like the ladies above mentioned, and buy fabric with a bit of lycra or spandex in it. The way the gals are standing, too, makes the bottom look even slimmer than it actually is. Optical illusions!
I think you actually might have more luck with a modern pattern for achieving that look.
Here's a few that might help:

I also blog. My name says what it's about.
http://wearinghistory.blogspot.com
I use it for sharing research, sewing, and style, and updates on what's going on with my etsy store. I like blogging, really, but sometimes I don't do it for a few days because of lack of motivation to upload...
I think it depends!
I think I look younger than I am in everyday wear. When I wear vintage I think I actually look my age! But when I wear my vintage glasses it tacks on some years.
For example.
I'm nearly 29, for reference.
Normal, in vintage, in vintage with glasses.
Things really aren't that different for me, but I know it's cause I'm married now and we're sharing the bills. If I was single right now I'd be worried. I've been unemployed since May, and I haven't seen much in the way of jobs either. I've been selling things online and it's actually starting...
