We played "smear the queer" in the Northeast as well in the 70's. I remember our gym teacher (former majorleague ballplayer) teaching us the rules. Them were the days, I can still taste the Reggie bars...
I just picked up a repro of a 1927 Sears catalog and it's remarkable how little work footwear has changed. Red Wing's standard six eyed moc-toes of today conform to the same essential pattern to those of 70 or 80 years ago. Comfortable too.
Lately my cable has been out.The bill is in my girlfriend's name and she decided that whiskey was more important for a few months. As there is virtually no non-cable reception in NYC anymore (our transmitter went down with the WTC and has never been properly replaced) I have been forced to visit...
You know,
I really wanted to like this movie. I'd heard about it for years. I like Edward James Olmos, he'an intense, smart actor whom I always buy as the charactor he's playing. It aired on our local PBS affiliate (the evil channel 13) a few years ago and boy was it a letdown. Whereas I was...
No, Savoia closed the 7th Street up a couple of years ago and opened up in Grand Central Station (good move for him as his best-paying clients are businessmen who are invariably commuters). I'll dig up his latest contact info and post it immediately following, might take me a day or two.
This...
I know a tailor who not only CAN make that but DOES make that. And How!
His name is Michele Savoia, quite a character. Swing-revival dinosaur. He is here in the city and has been tailoring 30's and 40's style duds for about 25 years, with vintage and high-grade current fabrics. His beltbacks...
I've never tried on a pair of Bill's. But I do own K-1s and can attest to their fine high-waisted and roomy fit, as well as their very solid construction. I found a rack of 'em at an outlet in Brooklyn for $15 per and bought the lot of 'em in my size.
Root left out the silent 1926 version which I've never seen, and the 1949 Alan Ladd version which is very faithful to the book and a fine reference for period clothes.
Jim,
I heard the phrase "what ho!" for the first time in the Powell & Pressburger film A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH when David Niven's dead co-pilot sends it as a greeting through an angel. Hadn't heard it since until now. What the devil does it mean? Is it just a limey "hello"?
Oh, I do find...
Keep your eye out on eBay for vintage undershirts to print the image on, I see 'em pretty often. However you manage to do this, I'm interested in having one of these shirts myself. I'm sure other cruder types like myself would be too. Please keep us abreast of any further development.
Doll,
Just poking fun at everybody. No offense intended and I officially apologize to all the squares and hedonists I may have offended. That being said, a quick browse of John O'Hara's early novels, Tiajuana bibles, or certain pre-code movies (The Public Enemy and Ladykiller come to mind) will...
Murph,
The shawl collared barnstormer is lined in more than half inch thick shearling. I live in New York where mid January to mid March generally lingers from five to twenty degrees farenheit (far less if you factor in windchill) and need no more than a t-shirt beneath the coat. Keep in mind...
Nuts to you guys. Roy Scheider does not look like Basil Rathbone and the appeal of Chicago pizza is a mystery that still eludes me, as does the appeal of the Cubs for that matter.
