Whatto!

Jim,
I heard the phrase "what ho!" for the first time in the Powell & Pressburger film A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH when David Niven's dead co-pilot sends it as a greeting through an angel. Hadn't heard it since until now. What the devil does it mean? Is it just a limey "hello"?
Oh, I do find this matter most awfully troublesome. Please advise, old sport.

Whatto BellyTank!

Leeds, up in't frozen North, is the rough location. Very rough in fact. Chapeltown...

Whatto Mud!, I believe that "whatto" is an upper class way of saying hello. Bertie Wooster always used to say it instead of "hello" in the TV adaptation of 'Jeeves and Wooster' with Fry and Laurie. I could be wrong, my wife tells me I generally am.

Still, I rather like it.

:)

It's something that I have never worked out.

Style is a matter of choice and I understand that, but, why buy a button down shirt collar and then NOT do the buttons up? Why wear a tie if you are not going to do it up properly?

They need a good poke in the eye in my opinion...

I think there may be a modicum of difference in trans-Atlantic sartorial nomenclature here:
From what I have observed at this establishment, what our American colleagues refer to as a button-down shirt, is actually a button-through shirt, a normal shirt. A button down collar is just that.

...and yes, a good eye-poking-inning is definitely in order.
