Around this neck of the woods, 'sweater', 'jersey' or 'pullover' all work, although sweater is probably the most common usage. A 'jumper', as A.C. pointed out, is a type of woman's dress.
A couple of recent thrift store finds:
I've never seen one like this...silk and wool but the wool is pink.
...and it wasn't particular cheap (when new, at least)!
A nice red rayon/wool from Sammy:
And finally, today's find...a nice Tootal yellow and red paisley (no horses, though...
Rummage sale today. Found this terrific silk curling club scarf. Judging by the badges it dates from between 1939 and 1950.
It has sixty curling club badges on it, ranging all over Canada and the U.S.
in Toronto as well and you're right...it was certainly cap weather this morning. No fedora today.
Heavy winds last night. A large branch fell on my neighbour's roof. It's already been cut up and roof repairs underway. We certainly didn't get the large quantity of rain that was predicted.
Try telling them that you remember standing on your front lawn with a bunch of neighbours watching Sputnik go over. "Sput-what"?
Sometimes I rather wish we still had parking meters here. Now we have to walk half a block to find the solar powered ticket dispensing device, all the time hoping...
And apparently we're both doing the FL thing while watching it! Small world. Same city, same movie, same winds. Fortunately, ButteMT61, last March, the city ordered my neighbour to cut down his very large, dying tree that was 20' from the back of my house so that's one less worry!
Actually...
Strikes me as a bit ironic that TCM is showing Inherit the Wind while my house is being lashed with rain and, of course, 100 kmh winds from Sandy. Naturally, I'm watching it. At least while I still have power.
Thank you for your encouraging comments BR Gordon, hatophile, mikespens, randooch, EggHead, Dogman, JonnyO, Splintercellsz, Landman, Chepstow and Scottyrocks.
I did stretch it with the sweatband in place. Frankly, I was amazed at how well it went and it seems to be remaining in its new size with no problem. Lucky. I seem to have a heck of time sewing in sweatbands. I've yet to do one decently, so I go out of my way to avoid it!
Thanks a lot everyone. It's a lot of fun rescuing these hats from oblivion.
The sweatband suffered no ill effects at all. I made several applications of Lexol before the stretch and the sweatband came through with flying colours. Even the stitching at the back came through the process...
I sometimes find bashed up, stained and abused western hats in local thrift stores. They're usually quite cheap and almost always sound, despite appearances. I enjoy picking them up and giving them some new life. I've done this to a couple of Stetson 3X beavers. They really make wonderful...
Found a very nice 9" bowl made by Royal Winton today at the thrift shop. It has the stamp used by Royal Winton from 1951. Judging by the grime I had to remove, it probably dates from the '50's.
Just watched all three. Thanks for post RBH. Not too sure about those blowtorches, though!
The cap video was quite interesting...I didn't know Stetson made their caps in Germany.
