Big Business sinks lower and lower

Patrick Bateman, Gordon Gecko and the eighties had nothing on the souless nastiness of today's (business) world. Go Wall Street!

    Lust, Caution

But those aren't subtitles. I meant to suggest that the distributor was fearful that a film in Mandarin with English subtitles might fail to attract an audience in North America, so they presented the trailer without dialogue so as not to take the risk. The text running through the trailer is...

    Lust, Caution

There were no subtitles in the trailer, nor was there the sound of a human voice, just music. [huh] Ride With the Devil was a a very good film.

    Loungers' Pets

This is the first time I lokked at this thread and I must say I'm disappointed that Lougers don't keep their pets in a display case.

    Lust, Caution

A pretty trailer for the film set in 1940s Shanghai and directed by Ang Lee... but why no dialogue? Are they afriad fo scaring off the audience with - gasp - subtitles? http://www.apple.com/trailers/focus_features/lustcaution/trailer/

    Ingmar Bergman R.I.P.

Bergman was one of the brightest stars in a period when film was taken seriously as an art form and when people went out to see movies in order to be challenged, astonished and moved. His like just doesn't exist anymore and that is too, too bad.

    The Godfather

Goftaher I and II are both extraordinary films. I don't think Pacino was ever better. Everything works in both movies. The dvd set has some great extra material too - well worht a look if you're a fan. Coppola was really just such a great filmmaker, it's sad that there doesn't seem to be any...

    Another hat shop gone

I just spotted this thread - must have missed it when it was fresh. Anyway... not true. Dave Rotman is still on duty in the shop his dad opened in 1929 - the year my dad was born just around the corner on Darcy Street. Rotman's was a name then known on Spadina for their shoe store. It was...

    Trimming a brim

It's not that hard to do it yourself, and will save you shoe leather if nothing else. I fold a little bit of cardboard over to the length I want to trim and use it as a guide to pencil mark a line around the brim. I cut it with a knife instead of scissors because I find I get a straighter...

    What do you consider "classic"?

Pretty subjective. So when we talk about "classic films" we should all call you up first to make sure liked it? And why can't Some like it Hot and Lady Eve both be classics? It's not like a WWF title afterall. Like architecture, classic movies can be defined by period - as Hadley H...

    Valkyrie

Got me on the uniform. But "looks good" should be translated from the ironic to mean - "looks like a plonker".

    Valkyrie

He looks good in an eyepatch and an SS uniform. It suits him somehow.

    Revolutionary Road

Also one of my favourite books. I am dreading this film because often my favourite books are massacred in their move to film. Ask the Dust is a good example. Also, Sam Mendes covered similair territory in his first film (suburban angst - though of the more overwrought, Douglas sirk variety -...

    Blackadder

Edmund: Secondly, Percy will join me in here for the gourmet turnip eating. Is the Turnip Surprise ready? [Baldrick and Percy begin giggling.] Baldrick: Yes, it is, My Lord. Edmund: Then what is so funny? Percy: Well, My Lord, while Baldrick and I were preparing the...
