The Royal Navy used up all the flower names for their corvettes. There was even an HMS Pansy and an HMS Bluebell. I believe the producers of the film were a little hard pressed to find an appropriate name for the ship and lucked into 'Compass Rose'...a flower that wasn't a flower! The RCN...
Next to 84 Charlie Mopic I always considered Go Tell The Spartans one of the better films about Vietnam. It's devoid of the jingoism and preaching that most films about the war seem to have. Burt Lancaster shows, yet again, what a fine quality actor he was.
Absolutely...Paths Of Glory is often considered one of the finest anti-war films made.
Go Tell The Spartans is an interesting choice as well. Not sure if it reaches the 'masterpiece' level but it certainly was an excellent film and it is certainly unappreciated. Good choice, WH1.
Vikings has become one of my very, very few regular shows and you're quite right about this season. The writing was decent in season one but this season it has become excellent. The acting is consistently good. The contrast in 'Blood Eagle' between the English wedding and the Viking wedding...
They Fight Like Soldiers, They Die Like Children by Romeo Dallaire (Lt. Gen. ret'd). Describes the author's campaign against the use of child soldiers. Very disturbing and well worth reading.
I know I mentioned the 'Bandy Papers' series in another thread, but when you do get around to those books, the third volume (It's Me Again) has Bandy leading a squadron of Dolphins.
After the war, Canada received 22 Fokker DVII's as 'war prizes'. A number of these went to equip the fledgling Canadian air force. There's only one survivor now, I believe (at least in Canada). It's sitting in a small county museum in the town of Knowlton, Quebec, south of Montreal. A few...
Thanks, esteban. The label on the Sammy is the same as your reversible tan one. Sixties? I was glad to find a Sammy in rayon rather than the rather stiff, shiny 'tricel' fabric that they used later.
After a long drought I finally found two new/old scarves today. The first one came from a house contents sale. There's no label but it's that nice old heavy rayon.
And I found this Sammy at a thrift store later on. It's reversible...red on the reverse. Sixties vintage perhaps?
The ice is the worst. We had a nasty ice storm at Christmas. I had 5 days with no power, no land line, no cell service, no heat, no car (thanks to a large tree limb) and temperatures that went down to -14C. I ended up shutting off the water and draining the pipes to prevent freezing. We...
Sounds like you got hit worse than we did. We had about 15 cm of snow (6-7 inches) and the temperature this morning was -18C but by today the plows had done their job and the streets were clear. It'll start melting tomorrow...at least of a couple of days!
I have to agree with you Two Types. Saving Private Ryan is a decent film but it’s not a masterpiece. Once the opening sequence is finished, the film becomes a pretty standard issue war movie. Actually it could almost be an episode of the 1960’s Vic Morrow vehicle, Combat. (I liked Combat...
