A question: How can I shape the front pinch/bash?
I showed my mother one of my new hats (a 1940s Dobbs) and she unknowingly undid the pinch, making it look like a homburg. She has no real love or knowledge of hats or hat wearing outside of my dad wearing his straw hats and newer stingies.
I've never understood shaving your head if you're bald. To me, if you're bald and you keep what's left, you're basically declaring: "Yeah, I'm bald. And?" There's a sort of quiet, but bold dignity to it. To me shaving one's head feels like an effort to hide the fact that you're bald. I say this...
A question: Any good books on the seemingly overnight transformation from the Kennedy/early LBJ 60s--a still conservative era of hats, short hair, suits, etc--to the era of long hair, beards, T-shirts and Jeans, rock music, etc?
I mean compare 1960 to 1969--Two totally different epochs...
Thought I'd update my own topic...I never realized how common it was until recently, until I saw a few new pictures.
My great great uncle (1911-1970) wearing a T-Shirt and Slacks, mid 1950s:
My grandpa (1929-) wearing a T-shirt and slacks, between the mid 50s and early 60s. Wore a T-Shirt...
A question--
This is a photograph of my grandpa (foreground in the white shirt) and his brother, apparently playing some sort of game. It was taken in August 1973. Both were of the Golden Era generation--one was born in 1912, the other in 1920. As you can see, both have on ankle high socks. Was...
The crown of the first hat seems much lower than the crown of the other two pictures. I have pretty much the whole series on DVD and the hat is consistently like the last two pictures. It is pretty much the same hat throughout.

Go to 3:26 and onward. I wonder what kind of Fedora he wore--I don't think it's a Stingy. And I LOVE the pinch.
Something weird I've noticed. In all the publicity shots for the show, Archie wears this Porkpie like hat:
Yet in the show itself, he NEVER wears that hat, instead wearing this Fedora:
I wonder why the publicity photos all show him wearing a hat he never wore on the show itself. It...
Have a 2 3/4th inch brimmed fedora on the way, vintage Dobbs; Also a 1 3/4th" hat. I want more wide brimmed fedoras but they are harder to find on Ebay than vintage short brimmed. I like both equally.
Well, not today, but the first hats I ever wore outside of a baseball cap:
First few are Easter 1993:
Last two are Summer 1996:
So, I had an early introduction to hat wearing.
I love the side bash too. I also love the look of a battered hat--you should have nice ones for sure but a battered old one like FDR's has a certain charm to it too. My favorite kind of bash is like the kind my Great Uncle's hat had:
Or like Indiana Jones:
What I'm thinking is--If the hat can be advertised as something which is both "cool" looking and ALSO as something that has a lot of practical value--and it's marketed in a way that's aimed at the younger generation (My generation, the say 18-25 year olds), perhaps more of my generation will...
For me I'd have to say either:
1933-1963
or
1945-1974 (WWII's end to Nixon resigning along with the start of stagflation after almost 30 years of uninterrupted economic prosperity)
or:
1920-1965
